EDWARD DENNIS (DENNY) HUGHES December 16, 1925 - August 19, 2001 It is with great sadness that we announce the death of our father and grand-father, Denny Hughes. Dad passed away August 19, 2001 surrounded by his family after a courageous battle with a lengthy illness. His memory will be cherished by his daughter Paula (Darren) son Scott (Denyse) grand-children, Nick and Amy; sisters, Priscilla (Cliff) Venus, Sheila (Don) Gemmel; sisters-in-law, Elsie Hughes, Patricia Hughes, and Virginia (Joe) Berglove; as well as numerous nieces and nephews; and the Morris family. He was predeceased by his wife Winifred; and his brothers, Jack, Maldwyn, and Harold "Dodds" Hughes. Denny was born and raised in East Kildonan where he lived for most of his life. He was a founding member of the Kildonan Canoe Club and enjoyed many summers paddling on the Red River. He served overseas as a member of the Royal Canadian Navy during the Second World War. After the war, he was employed by the CPR for over 40 years until he retired in 1986. He was a Past Master at Kildonan Lodge #131 and had recently received his 50 year medal. Dad loved the outdoors and had always been extremely active. His interest included camping, canoeing, sailing, fishing, swimming, skiing, golf, and curling. As a family, we spent many wonderful summers camping at Birds Hill Park and Falcon Lake. Most recently, it was his grandchildren who were the light of his life. Funeral service will be held Thursday, August 23 at 2:00 p.m. in Green Acres Funeral Chapel, Hwy.#1 East at Green Acres Lane. Interment will follow in Green Acres Memorial Gardens. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to the Childrens Hospital, 108-671 William Ave., Winnipeg, MB R3E 0Z2 or the Heart and Stroke Foundation, 301-352 Donald St., Winnipeg, MB R3C 2H8. The family would like to express their sincere appreciation to the staff of St. Boniface Hospital in the Emergency Department, CVT Unit, Medicine and Palliative Care Wards for their care, kindness, and compassion during Dads visits to the hospital.
