Date of Passing: Aug 21, 2001Offer Condolences or Memory
GRIETJE KUIK (nee VAN DER SLUIS) November 26, 1899 - August 21, 2001 On August 21, 2001, it pleased the Lord to take to Himself into His eternal glory our dear wife, mother, grandmother, great-grandmother and great-great-grandmother, Grietje Kuik (nee van der Sluis) at the age of 101. She leaves behind her husband of 82 years, Jakob Kuik; seven children, Margje, Gerry and his wife Johanna, John and his wife Ardis, Jannie and her husband Len, Jenny and her husband Sy, Bert and his wife Alice, Jake and his wife Rita; as well as 40 grandchildren; 176 great-grand-children; and 26 great-great-grandchildren. She was predeceased by an infant daughter and son; and by their oldest son Jan who died in a concentration camp during the Second World War; also by two sons-in-law, Lefert Meijer and Joe van Dijk; and a grandson by marriage Henk Visscher. Born on November 26, 1899, Mom (or Oma as she was called by most) lived in The Netherlands for the first 50 years of her life. She married Jakob Kuik in 1918, and they had 10 children, all born there. Due to the difficulties they experienced during the Depression of the 1930s as well as the Second World War and its after-effects, they decided as a family to immigrate to Canada in 1950, settling in Manitoba in the Homewood-Carman area. From 1955-1965 Dad and Mom farmed in the Graysville district, retiring in 1965 to Carman, where they lived until the early 1990s. For a few years they lived in Winnipeg, but then, because of their advanced age, they became residents of Boyne Lodge in Carman. In the summer of 2000, they were moved to Bethania Personal Care Home in Winnipeg, where Dad (Opa) still resides. Not only was Mom a loving mother and grandmother to her family, but with fondness and thankfulness we also remember her selfless love and care for the many others to whom they opened their home through the years. She simply did what was given her to do in the quiet confidence of her faith and trust in God. An active member of the church all her life, Mothers humble walk with the LORD has been a great example for all of us. Knowing that she is with her Lord and Saviour is our great comfort. We express our heartfelt thanks to the staff of both Boyne Lodge and Bethania Personal Care Home for the excellent, loving care Mom received and Dad continues to receive from them. Viewing will be held on August 25 from 1:00 to 2:00 p.m. at the Canadian Reformed Church in Carman. At 2:00 p.m. the funeral service will take place at the church. Rev. J. Van Rietschoten officiating. Interment at Greenwood Cemetery, Carman. Doyles Funeral Home in charge of arrangements. In lieu of flowers donations may be made to a charity of choice.
