MARY MANKO On Tuesday, August 21, 2001, at the McCreary / Alonsa Health Centre, Mary Manko, a resident of the McCreary / Alonsa Personal Care Home and formerly of Portage la Prairie, widow of the late John Manko, passed away at the age of 87 years. Funeral service will be held at the McCreary Roman Catholic Church, McCreary, MB, on Saturday, August 25 at 10:00 a.m. Interment will follow in the family plot at Hillside Cemetery, Portage la Prairie, at 3:00 p.m. Mary was born on May 8, 1914, daughter of John and Lucia Shura at Glenhope, MB, where she was raised and attended the Armstrong School. She was then employed as a housekeeper in Neepawa and later in Winnipeg. In 1932 she married John Manko and they farmed at Glenhope and McCreary until 1967, when they moved to Portage. Here she was employed at the Manitoba Developmental Centre until her retirement in 1980. In 1996 she returned to McCreary to reside. Mary was a member of the Ukrainian Catholic Church of the Assumption and formerly a member of the Ukrainian Catholic Church in Glenhope. Her interests included flowers, gardening, playing bingo and cards, sewing, quilting, and crocheting. She enjoyed singing and sang with the senior choir for several years. She especially enjoyed reading novels. Her greatest pleasure was her family, grandchildren, great-grandchildren, and great-great-grandchildren. Predeceased by her husband John in 1970; son Ernie; brother John Shura; sisters, Emily (Minnie) Forkutza, and Anne at the age of two and one-half years, she leaves to mourn her passing three sons, Mervin and Edna of McCreary, Leonard (Len) and Marilyn of Selkirk, Gerald and Theresa of The Pas; daughter Merle and Harold Olson of Thunder Bay; daughter-in-law Margaret of Calgary; 13 grandchildren; 14 great-grandchildren; and two great-great-grandchildren. Also surviving is her brother Steve (Nellie) of McCreary; her sisters, Anne Shyiak of Brooks, AB, Olga and John Kuzyk, Julia and Bill Stefanyshen; sisters-in-law, Sally Shura and Sophie Wilson, all of McCreary; brother-in-law Bill Forkutza; and many nieces and nephews.
