Send Flowers to the Family Offer Condolences or MemorySTEVE N. MATIATION Peacefully on Monday, August 27, 2001, at the Riverview Health Centre, Steve N. Matiation passed away at the age of 93. Steve was predeceased by his father Nick and mother Ann; brothers, John and Mike and three siblings who died at an early age. He was a very caring and giving person who will be lovingly remembered by his wife Mary; daughter Lecia (Bill) son Leonard (Gail) grandchildren, Nicole (Pascal), Jodi (Ward), Stefan (Cathy), Bill (Linda), Mike (Glenda), Taras, Wendy (Dave) and great-grandchildren, Gavin, Katya, Colten, Solana, Alicia, Oksana, Nicholas, Charlie, Katie, Sarah and Jenna. Also brothers, Bill, Jerry, Peter and sisters, Lena and Elsie. Steve spent his childhood on a farm bordering the Riding Mountain, National Park. He loved the outdoors and had a great appreciation for the environment in which he lived. In 1932 he completed a course in Barbering in Winnipeg and worked at the trade for a short time. In July 1934 he married Mary Nychek and they ventured into the general store business in Oakburn which they operated for 21 years. In 1956 they purchased the "Wigwam Restaurant" at Clear Lake and in 1973 they sold the business and retired to Winnipeg, where he had the opportunity to pursue his love of gardening, building, repairing and playing his "fiddle". Steve was very much a community oriented person. He was the first president of the Oakburn Board of Trade. He served in different capacities on the local school board, skating rink committee, Ukrainian National Home and the Shoal Lake Hospital Board. In addition to serving on the various boards, Steve was very much involved in the cultural activities of the community. He enjoyed participating in concerts, plays and choirs. He had a passion for music but the "fiddle" was his favourite. He spent much of his limited free time rendering his favourite tunes to appreciative listeners. His love of music was emphasized by one of his last statements, "Are the musicians gone?", "So the dancing is over." Vichnaya Pamyat A memorial service will be held in the Chapel at Riverview Health Centre, 1 Morley Ave., on Thursday, August 30 at 7:30 p.m. Funeral service will take place in Oakburn, MB on Saturday, September 1 at 10:00 a.m., in the Ukrainian Catholic Church, Rev. Fr. George Malik officiating. The family extends heartfelt thanks to the staff of Riverview Health Centre. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Riverview Health Centre or a charity of your choice. Reys Funeral Home, Shoal Lake, MB in care of arrangements, 759-2160.
