Date of Passing: Aug 31, 2001
Offer Condolences or MemoryDOROTHY LILIAN AIKMAN (nee TRUTE) Suddenly on August 31, 2001 at the Victoria Hospital, aged 81 years. Dorothy, or Dot, as she was known to all who knew her, was born in Winnipeg on March 12, 1920. She was predeceased by her husband of 52 years, James, in December of 2000; her mother Eva, and her father, Adams; as well as her twin brother, Robert Henry. Dorothy leaves to mourn her sister Phyllis Hoyle (Harry) her four sons, Stuart, Donald, Craig and Darryl; her grand-children, Sean, Neil, Dustin, Trevor, Ashleigh, Kyle. Kirsten, Dominic, and Tyler all of whom she so dearly loved. She also leaves to mourn her sisters-in-law, Hazel Aikman (Hugh), Evelyn Aikman, Mary Aikman; May and Jim Weir; many nephews and nieces; daughters-in-law and her many friends. Dorothy was raised in the West End of Winnipeg, attending Daniel MacIntyre Collegiate where she was an excellent student and was also active in sports. She was a very amicable person and maintained her friendship with all her classmates until she passed away. She went to work for Eatons during the war where she met her husband, James. They were married in 1948 and in 1949 left Eatons to become a full-time parent and mother. They lived on McDermot Avenue in the West End. In 1954, they moved to Ash Street where she lived until she passed away. Dot was active in the United Church, firstly at St. Pauls and later at Oxford United in her younger years. She also became involved with the Meals on Wheels program in which she delivered meals to the elderly and shut-in for 32 years. In her latter years, she had been actively involved with the Womens Christian Temperance Union (WCTU) firstly as secretary and then as president, an office which she had held for over 15 years. Whenever she was involved with anything, you always knew who was in charge. She was a very strong willed person. She was an avid gardener and loved flowers. She could make anything grow and spent most of her relaxation time with her garden. She also loved to bowl which she did every week during the winter months up until her death. She was liked by all who knew her and will be sorely missed. Friends may call at Thomson Funeral Chapel for viewing on Friday, September 7 from 7:00 to 8:00 p.m. Funeral service will be held on Saturday, September 8 at 11:00 a.m. in Thomson Funeral Chapels, 669 Broadway with Captain Mary Wray officiating. Dorothy will be interred along with the remains of her husband of 52 years, James, who was previously cremated, in the same interment ceremony at Chapel Lawns Cemetery, 4000 Portage Ave. following her funeral service. The family requests that there be no flowers. In lieu of flowers, one may make a contribution to the Autism Society of British Columbia, Suite 301-3701 East Hastings St., Burnaby, BC, V5Z 2H6.
