IRIS MAY SHANTZ (nee LAWRENCE) Suddenly on September 4, 2001 at the St. Boniface Hospital, Iris Shantz passed away at the age of 88. Iris memory will be cherished by her daughters, Donna Laroque (Gord) and Marilyn Shantz (Wayne), grandchildren, Lindsay (Brandon), Tim and Erinn, brother-in-law Russell Shantz, nephew David Shantz of Denver (Betty) and their children, Susan, Michael and Chris. Iris was predeceased by her loving husband Gib, brother-in-law Harold (Marvel), sisters-in-law, Alberta (Sam), Bess (Stan) and Dot. Iris was born and raised in Winnipeg, growing up in St. Vital. She worked at the Western Empire as a secretary and later at Great-West Life where she met the love of her life, Gib. They shared many years together and their loving relationship and gentle ways have always been a source of much comfort and cherished memories for their family. Iris always looked on the bright side of life. With her loving nature and ever present sense of humour, it always felt good to be around her. She was young at heart and her youthfulness was contagious. She cared so much for the well-being of others in her life, always thinking of them first. Her wisdom and practical advice helped many. Always with much affection, she enjoyed telling us stories about the experiences she and Dad shared over the years. As a long time resident of Riverview, Iris belonged to Riverview United Church and loved playing bridge and bingo with her friends and neighbors. An accomplished pianist, Mom always enjoyed entertaining us - she could play anything under the sun. Iris was generous and thoughtful and we were truly blessed to have had such a loving Mom, Grandma and true friend. She was the best. Funeral services will be held on Friday, September 7th, at 3:00 p.m. at the Chapel Lawn Funeral Home, 4000 Portage Ave., with Rev. Russell Wardell officiating. Interment will follow in Chapel Lawn Memorial Gardens. A gathering of family and friends will be held in the Chapel Lawn Reception Centre to celebrate Iris life. Donations may be made to CancerCare Manitoba, ON 109-675 McDermot Avenue, Winnipeg, MB, R3E 0V9 or the Canadian Cancer Society, 193 Sherbrook Street, Winnipeg, MB, R3C 2B7. Special thanks to Dr. John Bracken and all the caring staff on the 7A South Ward at St. Boniface Hospital. Arrangements entrusted to: CHAPEL LAWN FUNERAL HOME CEMETERY AND CREMATORIUM 885-9715
