RALPH CECIL THATCHER January 28, 1912 - September 2, 2001 It is with deep sorrow we announce the passing of our beloved husband, father and grandfather Ralph Cecil Thatcher. He passed away suddenly in his home, aged 89. He is survived by his wife Kathleen (Butterfield) his daughter Patricia; his grandsons, Bradley and Stuart Irvine; and his brother Stanley. He was predeceased by his parents, Walter and Edith Thatcher; and two sisters, Doris Thatcher and Tryphena Metro. Ralph married Kathleen in 1940. In 1942 he was accepted by the City of Winnipeg Fire Department where he worked until his retirement in 1977. Ralph had a great love for dance music and played drums in various dance bands for many years. He and mother also played recorded music for many weddings and socials during the 50s, 60s and 70s until their retirement. After retiring from the Fire Department, Ralph had an RV business. We have fond memories of family camping and during their early retirement years, Ralph and Kay had many wonderful camping trips. Ralph was instrumental in getting the fire fighters marching band started and played with the band after his retirement until his stroke in 1995. He was a member of the Windsor Masonic Lodge, Winnipeg. In 1996 Ralph and Kay moved to Altona, MB where he resided at the time of his death. The family would like to express their sincere thanks to the Altona Home Care staff, ambulance attendants, Dr. Bueddefeld and the nursing staff of the Altona Community Memorial Health Centre. A memorial service will be held at Wiebe Funeral Home, 216 Centre Ave. E., Altona, on Friday, September 7 at 11:30 a.m., with a graveside service at Waverley Memorial Gardens, Waverley at Chevrier in Winnipeg, at 2:00 p.m. September 7. In lieu of flowers, if friends so wish, memorial donations may be made to the Heart and Stroke Foundation or the Fire Fighters Burn Fund. Wiebe Funeral Home, Altona, in care of arrangements, (204) 324-5404.
