ROY PERCIVAL NORDLINGER On Thursday, September 13, 2001, Roy Percival Nordlinger died peacefully at the Victoria General Hospital in Winnipeg. Roy is survived by his beloved wife Maurine, stepsons, Fred (Tracy) and Doug (Kim) Kozak; stepdaughter Glenys (Larry) Robinson; and grandchildren, James, Lee, Brett, Nolan, Nicholas, Tanner, Connor, and Megan; his very special niece Karen (Glen) Urquhart of Vancouver; and his nephew Peter Nordlinger of Victoria, BC. He was predeceased by his parents, Annie and Paul and his brothers, Eric and Ken. Roy was born on September 21, 1925 in the village of Manson, MB and was proud of his small town upbringing and the memories of his youth in that community close to the Saskatchewan border. He enlisted in the Royal Canadian Navy in 1943, and saw active naval service in the North Atlantic during the Second World War. After his discharge late in 1945, Roy joined the federal civil service with the Department of Veterans Affairs at Deer Lodge Hospital in Winnipeg. He held many responsible positions during a 39-year career at Deer Lodge, primarily as Director of Administrative Services. He was Assistant Executive Director of Support Services when he retired in 1985. Since Roy and Maurine married in 1991, they enjoyed a lifestyle with summers in Winnipeg and as snowbirds for six months of the year in their winter home in Mesa, Arizona. They made many new friends and associates in Arizona, and Roy loved to be at his "home away from home" in the American southwest. Over the years, Roy was an eager athlete and natural sportsman. He participated in track and field, hockey, and baseball as a youngster in Manson. His major sports interests were in golf and curling. He joined the Charleswood Golf Club in 1962, and was an avid golfer and loyal member of that club until his passing. He was the editor of its Tee Mee Newsletter and presented the annual Tee Mee awards. Until his recent illness, he was expecting to play in the final mens Closing Scramble at Charleswood this past Saturday. Roy began an association with Valour Road Curling Club as a member of the Sunday afternoon DVA Curling League. At the same time, he joined the regular mens club at Valour Road in 1951, and became one of its A-Group curlers for many years. His key achievement on the curling ice came as a third for skip Bill Millar, with Cliff Lord and Percy Sarahs at second and lead, in winning the Manitoba and Northwestern Ontario Legion Curling Championship, and advancing to the legions national playdown. Roys administrative talents led to active involvement on the executive committee and board of directors at Valour Road Curling Club. He served as the clubs president in 1962-63, was named an Honorary Life Member in 1983, and enjoyed the fellowship of the clubs Past Presidents Association. He was elected to the executive council of the Manitoba Curling Association in 1970, and served the MCA for 15 years, rising to become its president in 1983-84. He became an Honorary Life Member of the MCA in 1985. The family would like to express heartfelt thanks to Doctors J. Gillespie and B. Shah and the medical staff at Victoria General Hospital for the warm and compassionate care Roy received during his illness. Roys funeral service will be held on Tuesday, September 18 at 11:00 a.m. in the Leatherdale Gardiner Funeral Chapel, 1858 Portage Ave., Rev. Bruce Martin officiating. If friends desire, donations may be made in Roys name to the Childrens Wish Foundation of Canada, 350 St. Marys Ave., Winnipeg, MB R3C 3J2 or CancerCare Manitoba, ON 109-675 McDermot Ave., Winnipeg, MB R3E 0V9.
