LUDWIG HOPPE On Saturday, September 15, 2001, shortly after developing pneumonia, Ludwig Hoppe, aged 73, peacefully passed away with dignity at The Victoria General Hospital with his loving wife Anna and daughter Rosel by his side. Prior to his passing, he was blessed with knowing that Heinrich and Adeline Holschen, Tim Holden and grandson Tyler were also by his side to wish him a peaceful journey. His challenges in life were many. Through his determination, strength of will and just plain stubbornness, he fought many difficult battles, including a body imprisoned by the ravages of Muscular Dystrophy. He was predeceased by his parents, Wilhelm and Emma and his sister and brother. Ludwig is survived by his devoted wife of 45 years, Anna; daughter Rosel (Tim) Holden; brother-in-law Heinrich Holschen (Adeline), nephew Herman Holschen (Susan) and family, relatives in Germany and the Ukraine; and his very special grandson Tyler who could always put a smile on "Opas" face and make him chuckle by doing something mischievous. He was born November 9, 1927 near Pulin, Ukraine and in his youth worked and lived in Kleinlangheim, Kreis Kitzingen/Germany. He immigrated to Canada in 1954 and married Anna in Winnipeg on April 7, 1956. He worked as a labourer in a leather factory, for a coffin manufacturer and at Turner & Seymour from where he retired due to the advancement of his illness. Throughout his life, he had a passion for repairing clocks and watches. After retiring, he worked with his good friend Theo Neumann and loved the challenge of repairing cuckoo clocks that people felt were unfixable. His complaints were few and we were all told not to make a fuss. We know he appreciated the little things the most: Tante Lenas Frankfurter Kranz, an apple pie, his daughters experimental cooking and he winked and laughed when Anna found out that he had cheated at playing cards with her. Ludwigs funeral service will be held on Friday, September 21 at 10:30 a.m. in Lutheran Church of the Cross, 560 Arlington St., with Pastor Christoph Reiners officiating. A private family interment will take place in St. Vital Cemetery. Our family wishes to express our heartfelt thanks to The Victoria Hospital Emergency Department and to Dr. Thorlakson and the ICU staff who were so kind, compassionate and caring in their treatment of my father. Our thanks to his home care workers who were all wonderful and very patient, especially to Val, with whom my father thoroughly enjoyed his company. To all our family, friends, co-workers and neighbours, we thank you for your thoughts and prayers, your shoulder to cry on and your hand to hold onto. Flowers are gratefully declined. Should you desire, donations may be made in Ludwigs memory to The Muscular Dystrophy Association, 117 - 383 Provencher Blvd., Winnipeg, MB R2H 3B4, or The Victoria Hospital (Research and Service Fund), 2340 Pembina Hwy., Winnipeg, MB R3T 2E8, or to a charity of your choice. For many years, your joys were few your struggles far too many Rest in peace, dear Dad without the pain and suffering the limits that your earthly body placed upon you, can no longer torment or bind Race with the wind, walk in the meadow and bask in the warm sunshine may your wings now spread far and wide and allow your soul to roam free.
