GRANT STEWART HOLMES Suddenly and unexpectedly on Sunday, September 16, 2001, with family at his side, Grant Holmes passed away from complications following surgery. Grant was the dearly beloved husband of Roberta and the devoted father of Jennifer, Craig, and Kathy. Also surviving are Grants brother Ross and his family, Marilyn, Milton, Ross Jr. and Samantha, as well as his extended family, Lila, Jim, Don, Bernice, Glenn and Carolyn Kennedy. He was predeceased by his mother Margaret in 1965, and his father Oliver in 1973. Grant was born in Saskatoon and moved to Winnipeg with his family in 1955. In 1957 Grant joined Wardrop Engineering Inc. as a summer student, and thus began a career that spanned over 40 years, until his retirement in 1997. He was a loyal and valued employee of Wardrop, and was very proud to be made a partner of the firm in 1987 . Grant was also proud to be appointed to various boards over the years: The Manitoba License Appeal Board, The Royal Canadian Mint Board, and the Manitoba Liquor Control Commission, of which he served as Chairman. He was also a member of Southwood Golf and Country Club and the Reh-Fit Centre. Grant had three main passions in his life: family, golf, and politics. First and foremost, Grant was a family man. He was a devoted and caring husband to Roberta for 34 years, and a proud, supportive and much-loved dad to his three kids. Roberta and Grant shared many mutual interests, particularly their love of sports, and attended many different sporting and cultural events together over the years. They also enjoyed many late nights together with their dear friends in the "Gourmet Club". He was a super dad to his three kids, always there for them, whether it be on the sidelines at their sporting events, or encouraging them throughout their academic years. Early on he instilled in them the importance of furthering their education, and surely no father could have been prouder than Grant as he sat in the audience at the University on three different occasions watching each of them receive their degrees. Grant had been a member of Southwood Golf and Country Club for several years, and how he cherished each and every weekend spent on the fairways with his group, the Hackers and Slashers. Not much could keep Homer off the course, and it was fitting that on his last game he birdied the eighteenth hole, and missed that elusive hole-in-one by inches (again!) He also enjoyed various golf get-aways with the guys, particularly the annual Clear Lake jaunt, and had been looking forward to spending the winter golfing in Texas with Roberta and many of their friends from Southwood. Grants third passion was politics. He was a long-time member of the Progressive Conservative Party, and was presented with an Honorary Life Membership last November. He enjoyed the challenge of an election, and worked tirelessly on many different campaigns covering all three levels of government over the years. When Grants friends threw a surprise party for him on the occasion of his fiftieth birthday, guests included his city councilor, his MLA, his MP, and the Premier of the province - all of whom he had helped to get elected. Passionate, steadfast and unwavering in his beliefs, he never missed the opportunity to try to convert others to his way of thinking. The family would like to extend our heartfelt thanks to all of our friends who are helping us through this most difficult time. Your wonderful support, your love, your caring messages and offers of help do so much to sustain us at this time, and knowing how much you cared for Grant makes us so proud to have had this special man in our lives. We shall miss him dearly, and our memories of our many happy times together will live with us forever. We would also like to thank the nurses and doctors at the Victoria and Grace Hospitals who provided Grant with the best possible care over the past month, and the staff in the St. Boniface Emergency Room for their care and compassion. A service of remembrance will take place at 1:00 p.m. on Friday, September 21 in the Thomson Funeral Chapels, 669 Broadway, with Rose Ferries officiating. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to CancerCare Manitoba, ON109 -675 McDermot Avenue, Winnipeg, MB, R3E 0V9, to the Manitoba Heart and Stroke Foundation, 301-352 Donald St., Winnipeg, MB, R3B 2H8 or to a charity of ones choice.
