ALFRED GEORGE MANCER Passed away peace-fully on Sunday, September 16 at Victoria General Hospital, at age 92. He was predeceased by his wife of 62 years Nita in 1999; daughter Alison in 1986; son Ted and daughter-in-law Debbie in 1990; his parents Edwin and Margaret (nee Smith) and his sister Netta Baldock. Alf was born in 1909 in West St. Paul, MB, where his early years were spent at school and helping his father in his market garden operation. It was there, Alf began his lifes work in agriculture. In the middle of the great depression he was able to acquire a tract of virgin prairie grassland, which he cultivated successfully until his retirement. In 1940, he also became associated with The Manitoba Sugar Company when it opened for the production of sugar from locally grown sugar beets. He worked in their agricultural department for the next 35 years, retiring in 1975. He married Nita Estelle Alexander in 1936 and they resided in West St. Paul for seven years before moving to Winnipeg in 1943. He was a proud Life member of the Kiwanis Club and also a member of St. Andrews River Heights United Church. He enjoyed many friendships made through the Kiwanis Club, the Church, River Heights Community Club and his work. Alf and Nita traveled to many parts of the world but it was their cottage at West Hawk Lake that remained a special place for family and friends. Alf played hockey and baseball as a boy and these sports continued to be important pastimes all his life. He enjoyed spending time with his grandchildren, and they will forever fondly remember their Grandad. He is survived by his sons, Kent (Lee Hsia) and Terry (Eldred) his brother Edward; his son-in-law Alfie Breitenmoser; and grandchildren, Lisa, Colin, Jennifer, Emily, Jonathan, Evan, Leanne, Kari, Michael, Kyle, Sean, Selena, and Andrew. Many thanks to the HomeCare workers for their service and care in the past two years. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in Alfs memory to the Manitoba Lung Association, 629 McDermot Ave., Winnipeg, MB, R3A 1P6. Funeral services will be held in the Thomson Funeral Chapels, 669 Broadway, on Saturday, September 22 at 11:00 a.m. with the Rev. T. Hidichuk and Janet Walker officiating.
