CASIMIR HOLLINGER (1914 - 2001) Casimir passed away peacefully on Wednesday, September 19, 2001 at the Selkirk General Hospital, after a brief illness. He is survived by his wife of 59 years, Jean; children, Theresa (Robert) and John (Andree) grandchildren, Nika and Danielle; one sister Blanche; nieces and nephew, Bernice, Robert and Linda and many dear friends, neighbours and relatives. Cas was born in 1914 in Gonor, MB, son of Johan and Katherine. He chose teaching as a career and taught at Lowland, Gonor, Happy Thought and Selkirk for over 30 years. Cas also taught high school driver education for nearly 30 years and was one of the pioneers of this program in Manitoba. Very few young drivers in Selkirk during this time did not have Dad as an instructor. Cas and Jean were married in 1942 in Gonor. Shortly after, he was called upon to serve his country in the Second World War and spent several years overseas. He and Jean moved to Selkirk a few years after the war was over. It was there that they raised their family and spent their careers teaching. Golf was one of Dads passions and it played an important part in his life, especially in his retirement years. It was a rare day when Cas was not noticed on the Selkirk golf course or in the clubhouse sharing coffee and tall tales with his golfing buddies. In his later years, Cas also took up cycling and was a common sight on the roadways around Selkirk, East Selkirk and Lockport. Church was an important part of his life, and he rarely missed a Sunday service with his family at the Holy Trinity Church in Gonor. He spent many hours volunteering at church events and served on the church executive for many years. Dad had a keen wit and a wonderful sense of humour; he had a story for every occasion and would laugh just as hard at every joke each time he told it. He loved when family and friends came to visit and he treasured these occasions dearly. A funeral mass will be held on Saturday, September 22 at 10:00 a.m., in the Holy Trinity Ukrainian Catholic Church, 6297 Henderson Hwy., in Gonor, MB, with Father Harry Oliynek officiating. Interment will follow in the Churchyard cemetery. Pallbearers will be Robert Wall, Len Manahan, Dan Klimchuk, Bill Lalchun, Alvin Spewak and Robert Vincett. The family would like to express their heartfelt thanks to Dr. Hussain and the medical ward nursing staff at the Selkirk General Hospital for their care and compassion during his illness. Thanks also goes to those who visited Cas at home and in the hospital, and to the neighbours and friends who helped out at home during his illness in his last few months. "We love you and we will miss you." Gilbart Funeral Home, Selkirk in care of arrangements.
