ANTONI KARKOTA Peacefully, on Friday, September 14, 2001, at the Health Sciences Centre, Antoni (Tony) Karkota, passed away at the age of 82 years. Tony is survived by a number of nieces and nephews residing in Poland, along with several army comrades and close friends in Winnipeg. Tony was predeceased by his wife Mary in May 2001; his son Richard and his brothers and sister from Poland. Tony was born in Poland on September 19, 1919. At the start of the Second World War, Tony was taken to Russia and remained in labour camps until he joined the Polish Army in 1942. Serving under General Anders, Tony joined the 2nd Corpus and became a heavy artillery specialist with the 10th Battalion. As a decorated serviceman, Tony fought in many battles including the battle of Monte Casino. In 1947, Tony immigrated to Canada from England, eventually settling in Winnipeg, where he was gainfully employed in the steel industry until his retirement. During his employment and retirement, Tony was a member of the Royal Canadian Legion, A. Mynarski VC Branch 34 as well as the SPK Polish Combatants Association Branch 13. He also enjoyed working his garden and doing his yardwork. Wieczny odpuczynek racz mu dac panie. Funeral service will be held on Thursday, September 20, at 2:00 p.m. at Cropo Funeral Chapel, 1442 Main St. with an Oblate Father officiating. Viewing will take place between 1:00 - 2:00 p.m. also at the Chapel. Interment will follow the service at Holy Ghost Cemetery. CROPO FUNERAL CHAPEL in care of arrangements - 586-8044.
