LYONS (NEE ONEILL) Ada Lyons passed away peacefully on Wednesday, September 19, 2001, in Riverview Personal Care home where she has resided this past year. Born in 1907, Ada lived all her life in Winnipeg; since 1950, in the Crescentwood area. Predeceased by her husband, Robert J. W., in November 1975 and her sister, Olive (Peggy) Adamson, in 1994, Ada is survived by her two children, Margaret Anne Carr of Nanaimo, BC, and Robert ONeill Lyons of Vancouver, BC, and by her four grandchildren, Cindy, Donald, Janet (Jeremy Fraser), and Stephen. Ada attended Luxton and St. Johns Technical schools, and Wesley College. She obtained her B.A. in 1927, and was the Gold Medallist for her graduating class. She earned her M.A. from U. of M. A graduate of Winnipeg Normal School, she taught in Sanford, Manitoba, and at William White School in Winnipeg. After her children were grown, she taught piano and tutored French and English for many Winnipeg youngsters, (and many adults). Ada married Bob in June 1935. They were very involved, first in McDougall Methodist church and, after union, in St. Johns and Harrow United churches. Ada was a C.G.I.T. leader, and active worker in W.A., W.M.S., and the U.C.W. She was President of the Winnipeg Presbyterial for several years, and as such was active in Winnipeg Presbytery and Manitoba/North Western Ontario Conference. She was an accomplished pianist, and served as church organist at McDougall and Harrow churches. In later years she was very active in seniors activities in the city. She used her musical talent to entertain at and play for worship services in many of the citys nursing homes. She served for many years on the Board of the Jessie Ave. Convalescent Home, and was a regular visitor at Central Park Lodge and the Deaf Centre of Manitoba. She conducted the Good Companions ladies choir for many years. As an alumnus of Wesley College, she was an active member of the Womens Auxilliary of United College, now University of Winnipeg, serving a term as President, and 20 years as Treasurer. To honour the work of the auxiliary, she was made a Fellow of the University of Winnipeg in 1991. A service will be held on Tuesday, September 25 at 1:30 p.m. in Harrow United Church 955 Mulvey Ave. at Harrow with interment to follow in Elmwood Cemetery. Friends may call at Thomson Funeral Chapels 669 Broadway on Monday, September 24 between 6:30 and 8:30 p.m. Flowers are gratefully declined.
