Date of Passing: Sep 21, 2001
Send Flowers to the Family Offer Condolences or MemoryLAUFEY SIGRIDUR LINDAL Laufey passed away peacefully on Friday, September 21, 2001, at the age of 91. Laufey was the last remaining member of her family, having been predeceased by her parents Philip and Thordis Johnson; her beloved aunt Borga Thorsteinsdottir; sisters, Steina Johnson and Pauline Smith; brothers, Gilbert, Walter, Stefan and Steini Johnson; and her husband Frank Lindal. She is survived by her son Don and a large extended family of nieces and nephews. Laufey was born in Otto, MB, in November 1909. In 1924 her family relocated to a farm near Lundar. Laufey moved to Winnipeg shortly thereafter. She worked in the T. Eaton Co. mail order department and was a member of the companys Ladies Softball team for a number of years. In 1939 she married Frank Lindal, a commercial fisherman in northern Manitoba. With Frank away fishing for most of the year, Laufey raised their son Don on her own. He remembers her as a strong woman and a good mother who always had his best interest at heart. Laufey took great pride in her role as full time homemaker and mother. She was happiest bustling around the kitchen making Icelandic treats of vinarterta, ponnukokur and rullupylsa and hosting her famous New Years Day dinners. Laufey was a quiet, independent lady, proud of the fact that she remained in her own home until a fall put her in the hospital a few months ago. She appreciated the assistance of those who made that possible, especially her niece Phyllis Watson and nephew Fred Smith who took care of her shopping and errands and ensured that she and Don were well looked after and her home care worker Connie who helped her for several years. Her family would like to thank the staff at Oakview Place for the respect, affection and care they provided Laufey during her brief stay. Laufey was a generous and loving lady who will be remembered and missed not for what she did but for how she made others feel. Her warmth, humour and dignity in facing all lifes challenges are her legacy to those fortunate enough to have been loved by her. Sadly her illness robbed her of the opportunity to say goodbye to her many friends and relatives, but we should draw comfort from knowing that she held us in her heart. We are all richer for having known her. A memorial service will be held Wednesday, September 26 at 2:00 p.m. at Neil Bardal Inc., 984 Portage Ave., entrance on Aubrey Street. Flowers are gratefully declined; however, memorial donations may be made to the Manitoba Lung Association, 629 McDermot Ave., Winnipeg, MB, R3A 1P6. "Goodbye for now. See you soon."
