Send Flowers to the Family Offer Condolences or MemoryGOLDIE REBECCA EWEN (LEVY) Goldie (Mom) died suddenly on July 31, 2001 in her Vancouver home. Born in Montreal June 24, 1918, she completed high school showing early signs of her adventuresome spirit, and moved to New York. She served in the Canadian Womens Army Corps as a stenographer in Ottawa from 1943-1946. After travels to Mexico and California, Mom moved to the west coast and took up psychiatric nursing at Essondale Mental Hospital. Always interested in learning, she studied languages at UBC. Through mutual friends and politics, she met and later married Bruce Ewen. Mom fostered independence and creativity in her children, and encouraged high standards in their education. Her gentle green thumb often rescued plants and a menagerie of finches, kittens and puppies. Her wonderful latkes enriched mealtime debates, and we delighted in her reading "The Very Mischief". She was an activist in Ban the Bomb and PTA movements. As a feminist, she helped her children find their own ideals and speak out frankly. Her respect for individuals helped our dreams blossom. Mom was predeceased by her cherished sister Belle and parents Bessie and Isaac Levy. She is survived by brothers, Philip, Jerry and Samuel of Montreal and their families; her cousins, nieces and nephews and her own children, Judy Anderson (Jay), Jim Ewen (Pat Daniels) of Winnipeg, and Harry Ewen (Kim) and grandson Stuart of Drumheller. Mom loved the view at English Bay, and her independent life in West End Vancouver. Shed wanted to live longer, and would enjoy that her effects were donated to others in need. We miss her very much and will gather privately to celebrate her life and sustain her in ours.
