HARRY MONKMAN Peacefully on September 25, 2001 with his family at his side, Harry Monkman, husband, father, grandfather and great-grandfather, went to be with his Lord and Saviour. Harry leaves to cherish his memory his loving wife of 60 years, Elsie; his 10 children, Gerry (Mary), Ernie (Dianne), Fred (Marilyn), Willie (Gail), Lorne (Michelle), Darlene (Gil), Diane (Randy), John (Darlene), Jackie (Gord), Laurel (Gord) his 22 grandchildren; his 20 great-grandchildren; along with numerous dear friends and relatives. He is survived by one sister Laura Mowat; and two brothers, Garfield Monkman and Herbert Monkman. Harry was born on February 8, 1914 to Rosanne and William Monkman. He married Elsie Disbrowe on January 19, 1941 and began raising their family. Harry was an expert commercial fisherman on Lake Winnipeg and fished until well into his 70s. In the off seasons he worked in the bush sawmills and as a carpenter. He spent many seasons hunting and trapping in the north country and loved to experience the wilderness. He was a true outdoorsman. He loved nothing better than to share stories with his family and friends about his many adventures along the shores of Lake Winnipeg. Harry loved old-time music and loved to play his fiddle, which he did most of his life. Even as a young boy he played for many square dances and he even played at his own wedding. He was also quite an inventor. Whenever he needed a special tool or gadget he would methodically plan it out and simply make it. He had an uncanny ability to mathematically figure out exactly what was required. Harry spent many hours reading his Bible and gathered strength from the many passages he read. On September 25, he left his family with one of his very favourite passages, the 23rd Psalm. An evening service will be held on Friday, September 28 at 7:00 p.m. in the Gilbart Funeral Chapel, Selkirk. Funeral service will be held on Saturday, September 29 at 3:00 p.m. in the Good Shepherd Church, Selkirk. Cremation to follow, and interment to take place at Loon Straits, Sunday, September 30 at 2:00 p.m. The family would like to express their thanks to the doctors and nursing staff of the Selkirk General Hospital, the Health Sciences Centre, and his home care workers for their care and kindness. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the charity of ones choice. Gilbart Funeral Home, Selkirk, in care of arrangements.
