KAMIL ECKHARDT Peacefully at the Seven Oaks Hospital, with his daughter by his side, Kamil Eckhardt, widower of Mary Eckhardt, beloved father and grandfather passed away at the age of 73 years. Memories will be cherished by daughter Susan (Glen) and grandchildren, Lindsay and Jeff. He is also survived by brother John (Emma) and family of Grande Prairie, AB, brother Steve (Mary) and sister Anne of Penticton BC; and niece Irene Capka (Joe) and family. He was predeceased by his father John Eckhardt; step-father Joseph Cernansky and mother Adele Cernansky. Kam was born on May 6, 1928 in Topolcany, Slovakia, came to Canada when he was 10, and spent the rest of his childhood on the family farm in Dugald, MB. Kam received training in mechanics at Musker Engineering in Toronto. He then returned home to Dugald, where Kam and his brothers built an automotive repair shop. Kam went on to operate his repair shop for approximately 23 years, serving the farm communities in the area. In April 1955 Kam married Mary, his beloved wife of 42 years, who predeceased him in 1998. While raising their daughter Susan, the family lived in Dugald until 1978, when the business was sold and Kam moved his family to Transcona. Kam worked as a heavy equipment mechanic for the City of Winnipeg until 1988. Kam and Mary retired at Gull Lake, enjoying their cottage with family and close friends. Those were some of Kams happiest times, sitting by the beach, bird watching or tinkering with old trucks and tractors. Kam was well loved for his keen sense of humour. He loved country life and was happiest at home in familiar surroundings. While a resident at the Maples Nursing Home, he delighted staff with his humour and willingness to co-operate. He will be sadly missed by staff. The family would like to express deepest thanks to Gloria, Faye, and all the staff at Maples Nursing Home. Also to all those family and friends who came to visit during his long battle with illness. Funeral service will be held on Wednesday, October 3 at 2:00 p.m. at the Transcona Funeral Chapel, 1800 Day St., with viewing prior to the service. Burial to follow at the Transcona Cemetery. If friends so wish, donations may be made to Canadian Cancer Society or Canadian Diabetes Association. Transcona Funeral Chapel in care of arrangements.
