Send Flowers to the Family Offer Condolences or MemoryROMAN MICHAEL KOROL 1920 - 2001 It is with great sadness that we announce the peaceful passing of Roman Korol, beloved husband of Halyna, father and grandfather, on Saturday, September 29, 2001 at the age of 80 years. Roman Korol was born in Lviv, the western capital city of Ukraine, on November 1, 1920. He was the youngest son of Dmytro and Katarina Korol. Roman had two siblings, brother Yurko and sister Stanislava. In his youth he was very passionate about sports and music. He loved to play soccer especially, and he was a member of Lvivs championship soccer team "Ukraina". He was involved also, in many musical activities and played the trombone in high school and university orchestras. He completed his high school (gymnasia) education in Lviv, following which he was enrolled in the Faculty of Dentistry at the University of Lviv until the outbreak of the Second World War in 1939 which completely and dramatically changed his life. But Roman was a survivor and had an extreme determination to persevere. Because of his devout religious and personal beliefs he survived the horrors of being interned at Dachau Concentration Camp under forced labour during the Nazi regime. Following his release he met his beautiful wife Halyna Huk, also from Lviv, Ukraine. They were married in Munich, Germany on September 17, 1945. Roman, his wife and his oldest son Oleh immigrated to Canada and settled in Winnipeg in 1948. Within a few days of his arrival in Winnipeg, he started his new working career as a Linotype Operator at The Canadian Farmer newspaper. He later became the editor of the Ukrainian Voice weekly Ukrainian newspaper at the office of Trident Press. He retired after 37 years of service in 1985. During his period, he became actively involved in many community activities. He was very active throughout his life in the Ukrainian Youth Association of Canada, Plast, generously dedicating a majority of his free time. He was an active member of the Ukrainian Reading Association, Prosvita, for many years. Roman was a very religious person. He was an active parish member of Sts. Vladimir and Olga Cathedral for over 50 years. He continued his love of sports in Winnipeg and played soccer on several teams for many years. He also excelled in the sport of table-tennis and in 1954 he won the Western Canadian Championship. Romans great love of the outdoors was exemplified by his passion for the sport of fishing which he pursued with his many friends and his sons. He participated in many fishing tournaments, fishing derbies and he won the coveted Gold Manitoba Master Angler Award. Roman is survived by his wife Halyna of 56 years; his three sons, daughters-in-law, and grandchildren: Dr. Oleh Korol, Oral Surgeon, his wife Vera and daughter Raiya, of Toronto, ON; Dr. George Korol, Physician, his wife Shelly and daughter Alexa, of Winnipeg, MB; Dr. Adrian Korol, Chiropractor, his wife Beth and son Dallas Roman, of Manhattan Beach, CA. His niece Christina Dudko and family of Lviv, Ukraine. The family wishes to express their gratitude to Dr. Moncek, the medical staff and nurses at Seven Oaks Hospital for the dedicated care received. Panachyda was held on Tuesday, October 2 at 7:00 p.m. at Sts. Vladimir and Olga Cathedral, 115 McGregor Ave., Winnipeg. Divine liturgy will be held on Wednesday, (today), October 3 at 10:00 a.m. at Sts. Vladimir and Olga Cathedral. Interment to follow at All Saints Cemetery.
