STEPHEN SMOOK January 4, 1912 - October 2, 2001 It is with great sadness we announce the peaceful passing of Stephen Smook on October 2, 2001. He will always be remembered and lovingly missed by his wife of 59 years, Mary (nee Pupeza) his sister Lena Nowalsky; sister-in-law Agnes Skolaryk; brothers-in-law, Bill and Joe Pupeza; nieces, nephews, and family. He was predeceased by his parents, Wasyl (1956) and Anna (1951) his brother John (1982) and sister Mary (1999). Stephen was born at Senkiw, MB. During his youth he attended school at Senkiw and later in Winnipeg. He devoted his life to farming, doing what he loved best and took great pride in his farm. Stephen and Mary retired from farming, moved to their new home at Roseau River and enjoyed their retirement years socializing and tending their garden and yard. Stephen was well respected in his community and a very active member of the church at Senkiw. He served on the Executive Committee of the church for over 60 years. His ability to speak, read and write in Ukrainian and English was greatly valued and he was often called upon to speak at public functions. He had a keen ability to remember dates and events about the early pioneer days of Senkiw which he presented at the Senkiw Reunion, Clergy Visitations and public functions. Active pallbearers will be Rose Bodz, Jared Nawolsky, Angela Smook, John Smook, Dan Zaretski, and Bill Zaretski. Prayers will be held on Friday, October 5 at 7:30 p.m. at the Loewen Funeral Chapel in Steinbach, MB. A traditional funeral with divine liturgy will be held on Saturday, October 6 at 10:00 a.m. at the Ukrainian Orthodox Church of the Nativity of St. Mary at Senkiw, MB. Interment to follow at the Ukrainian Orthodox Cemetery at Senkiw. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Ukrainian Orthodox Church of Senkiw or to a charity of your choice.
