He also leaves his one remaining brother, Nick (Jean) Fedorchuk, of Winnipeg; his good friend and brother-in-law Steve (Jean) Smikles, of Rembrandt; many brothers-in-law, sisters-in-law, many nieces, nephews, and friends. Dad was predeceased by his first wife of 28 years, Victoria (nee Gottfried), his parents, Dymetro and Anastasia Fedorchuk, and his brothers, John, Mike, Peter and Alex. Dad was born in Winnipeg, and then at age 10 he and his family moved to farm on the Ridge in Arnes. As a young man, dad made his living farming and fishing. He worked closely with the Icelandic fishermen and this is where he learned to speak the Icelandic language fluently. He formed lifelong friendships with these people, especially one couple, Oli and Disa Einarson. Dad served in the Second World War from 1941 to 1945. After the war he returned to farm in Arnes. Dad met and married Victoria in 1948 and they stayed on the farm to raise their children. He continued to farm after moms passing in 1975. He later met and married Nellie (Skiba), and they moved to Gimli upon his retirement. Dad was an active member of the Arborg Canadian Legion #161 and dropped in to visit often. During his retirement, Dad enjoyed helping out at the farm, tending their large garden, fishing off the Gimli dock, bike rides, and sitting on the deck in the summer, watching the world go by. Our family would like to thank the Gimli Ambulance staff for their quick response, Dr. Chapnick and the nursing staff of J.M.H., especially Dale for all her thoughtfulness and kindness. Prayers will be said on Tuesday, October 9 at 7:00 p.m. in the Gilbart Funeral Chapel, Gimli. The funeral mass will be held at the Sacred Heart Ukrainian Catholic Church in Gimli on Wednesday, October 10 at 11:00 a.m. with Fr. Peter Chorney officiating. His grandsons, Aaron, Brent, and Derek Fedorchuk, Barry Woytowich, Grant Wiseman and Robert Taraschuk will take him on his final journey. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to the Heart and Stroke Foundation. Gilbart Funeral Home, Gimli, in care of arrangements.
