JOHN MATTSON It is with heavy hearts and great sadness that we announce the passing of John Mattson at Calvary Place, October 10, 2001. His memory will always be lovingly cherished by his wife of 65 years, Edith; his daughter and son-in-law Myrna and Ken Proctor; also grandchildren, Karen (Gordon) Bell of Hamiota, Kurt (Melissa) Proctor and great-grandchildren, Lauren and Kelsey Bell and Jordon, Mitchell and Haley Proctor. John is remembered by many nieces and nephews in Finland. John was born on October 20, 1905 in Esse, Backby, Finland. He came to Canada at the age of 18 and homesteaded in the Port Arthur, Fort William area near Pigeon River for five years. After meeting and marrying his wife Edith in Winnipeg they enjoyed five years living in Uchi Lake, Northern Ontario, a gold mining town. In 1942 they moved to Winnipeg and have lived here since. John worked as a carpenter with many contractors over the years including Poole and Swanson Construction. He took great pride in his trade and was proud to mention the many buildings he helped to construct including Lions Manor, Brandon General Hospital, Seven Sisters power station and many Safeways. He was a member of the Carpenters Union #232 for over 63 years, attending their annual banquets, dancing and enjoying himself. He also enjoyed and valued the wonderful friends he made throughout his lifetime. The love and support of family meant much to John and was very important to him. In the 1950s John sang in the Swedish Male Voice Choir. One of Johns greatest pleasures was sharing his love of the outdoors with his family at the cottage he built at Betula Lake. Hunting, fishing and blueberry picking were his favourite pastimes. He argued in fun that he picked the most and cleanest berries. A graveside memorial service will be held on Monday, October 15 at 2:00 p.m. in St. Clements Churchyard on Highway 9 across from Selkirk Steel Mill. Rev. Terry Throndson will officiate. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Alzheimer Ward, Calvary Place, 1325 Erin St., Winnipeg, MB, R3E 3R6.
