Born: Mar 21, 1921
Date of Passing: Oct 12, 2001
Offer Condolences or MemoryELISABETH (LIESEL) SCHULZ (nee SCHMIDT) 1921 - 2001 Peacefully, with her family by her side, Liesel Schulz passed away Friday morning, October 12, 2001 at Bethania Mennonite Personal Care Home at the age of 80 years. She will be sadly missed and lovingly remembered by her family, husband Hermann; daughter Doris and husband Roland Wickstrom; and grandchildren Eric and Laura of Winnipeg; two sisters, Susa Funk of Kelowna, BC, and Maria Wilms of Winnipeg and their families; one brother-in-law Heinz Schulz and his family in Germany. She also leaves numerous nieces and nephews, many relatives and precious friends. She was predeceased by her parents, Susanna and Abhram Schmidt, two sisters, Lena and Tina and two brothers, Johann and Abhram. Liesel was born on March 21, 1921 in Chortiza, U.S.S.R. where her childhood was cut short by the turbulent times of the Soviet farm collectivization during which she lost her father and brothers. She treasured her education and in her teens began a career in mechanical drafting in Chortiza which ended as the Second World War came to her town. Liesel ended up in Germany where she met Hermann. Marrying in 1949 they lived in Hamburg where their only child Doris was born in 1951. The family immigrated to Canada in 1957. Despite the difficult adjustments to a new country and language, Winnipeg soon grew to be her beloved home amidst church and many friends. Liesel loved her home and doing the work it took to make it a loving home. She took pleasure tending her apple trees with care for the fruit to bake Apfel Kuchen for friends and family. She enjoyed reading, church events and the opera. Her sewing abilities gave her hours of pleasure. In 1986, after retiring, she did volunteer work and when her twin grandchildren were born she devoted much of her time and love to them. Through the difficult past 5 years of Alzheimers Disease, the family wishes to sincerely thank the Winnipeg Home Care and Bethania Personal Care Home Staff who all helped with such kindness and compassion. Funeral services will be held on Tuesday, October 16, at 10:30 a.m. at First Mennonite Church, 922 Notre Dame Ave., Winnipeg with Reverend Franz Wiebe and Reverend Gerhard Friesen officiating. Interment to follow at Chapel Lawn Memorial Gardens. Prayers and viewing October 15, at 7:00 p.m. at Bethania Personal Care Home Chapel and at the church prior to the commencement of the service. In lieu of flowers donations may be made to First Mennonite Church Memorial Fund, 922 Notre Dame Ave., Winnipeg, MB R3E 0M9; Bethania Mennonite Personal Care Home, 1045 Concordia Ave., Winnipeg, MB R2K 3S7; or the Alzheimer Society of Manitoba, 120 Donald St., Winnipeg, MB R3C 4G2.
