Send Flowers to the Family Offer Condolences or MemoryJOHN HEMMERLING Peacefully, on October 11, 2001, John Hemmerling passed away at the age of 98. He is survived by two sons, Larry (Lorraine) and John (Joan). He also leaves to cherish his memory 14 grand-children and 24 great-grandchildren. As well as many nieces and nephews in Canada and Germany. John was predeceased by his wife of 62 years, Mary in 1989. He was also predeceased by two brothers and three sisters. Dad was born November 12, 1902 in Michalowka (named after his great-grandfather), formerly Austria, now Western Ukraine. He married Mary in 1927 and moved to Canada that same year. He worked on farms throughout Manitoba and Saskatchewan finally settling in Winnipeg where he was employed by Swifts for 35 years. He built a cottage at Lester Beach with the help of family, friends and neighbours. Dad enjoyed many years at the beach berry and mushroom picking with Mary. One of Dads greatest passions was his backyard vegetable garden, the bounty of which was enjoyed by family and friends. He also enjoyed cooking. He had an amazing memory for names, places and dates, even in his final days, and showed a genuine interest in everyone he met. We will cherish the countless memories; the games of Hola, the parties and celebrations, many of which he initiated, his love of music and dancing and his humour and wit. Dad lived a long and healthy life and was able to enjoy many, many happy and fun times with his children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren all of whom he was very proud. Dad never let his age stop him from doing the things he loved or from trying new things, such as riding a horse or swinging a golf club at the driving range. His trips to Las Vegas, Germany, British Columbia, Regina and Saskatoon all this before and long after he turned 90. Dad passed on many things to his family, some of the most important being his love for the land and country he adopted, and to be an outstanding citizen. He was an inspiration and left a legacy which will live on forever in our hearts and memories. The family would like to thank Dr. Ross and staff at the Kildonan Medical Centre. Dennis St. Laurent, Martha and the palliative care workers who cared for Dad with compassion and kindness during his brief illness. Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated on Monday, October 15 at 10:30 a.m. at St. Josephs Roman Catholic Church, 355 Andrews St. A private interment will follow. If friends so desire, donations may be made in Johns memory to a charity of your choice. CROPO FUNERAL CHAPEL in care of arrangements 586-8044.
