Send Flowers to the Family Offer Condolences or MemoryKALYNA MATEYCHUK (NAHORNIAK) It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of our mother, grandmother and great grandmother on Wednesday, September 26, 2001, after a struggle with cancer. Kalyna was born on September 24, 1910, in the village of Zaluche, Sniatyn region, Ivano-Frankivsk (Stanislav) province, Ukraine. Her father Roman Nahorniak and mother Maria Revichuk were poor peasants. There were six children in the family, brothers Ivan, Dmytro, Semyon, and sisters Maria, Kalyna and Ilena. Their father passed away in 1917 and their mother two years later in 1919. Kalyna was the last of the siblings to pass away. She arrived in Canada on November 3, 1929, and reached Winnipeg on November 6. Through her eldest brother, Ivan, already married and living in Winnipeg, Kalyna became acquainted with her future husband Nick (Mykola) Mateychuk who was from the same village. Nick and Kalyna were married on August 20, 1930. On July 27, 1931, she gave birth to her first daughter, Olga. Her second daughter, Mary, was born on October 12, 1932 and the third daughter, Lucy on December 26, 1933. Kalyna began to participate in the activities of the Ukrainian Labour-Farmer Temple Association. She joined the choir and the drama group. Two of her greatest loves were embroidery and Ukrainian cuisine. She also liked gardening. All these activities brought her joy and satisfaction. Kalyna was a long-time member of the Association of United Ukrainian Canadians, the Worker Benevolent Association, and for many years was a member of the Communist Party of Canada. She subscribed and supported the Ukrainian progressive press. She was an avid reader and even during her illness several books lay at her bedside in Grace Hospital. Her beloved husband, Nick, died in 1966. Kalyna became a resident of the Ivan Franko Manor where she lived for the past 17 years. Kalyna will be sadly missed and lovingly remembered by her family and many friends. She is survived by her daughters, Olga (Myron) Shatulsky, Mary (Victor) Semanowich, Lucy (Zenovy) Nykolyshyn; her grandchildren, Eugene (Sharon) Semanowich, Kathleen (Wilfred) Schubert, Susan (Richard) Szczepanski, Michele (Mark) Fontaine, Lydia (Rudiger) Hedrich, Vadim (Lisa) Nykolyshyn, Anatole and Sean Nykolyshyn; great-grandchildren, Kirsten, Nick, Mykola, Sasha, Taylor, Teagan, Vladymir and Kalyna. Cremation has taken place and a memorial service will be held on Friday, October 19, at 1:00 p.m. at the Ukrainian Labour Temple, corner of Pritchard and McGregor St. The family extends its most heartfelt thank to the doctors, nurses and staff of the 4th floor of Grace Hospital for their care, kindness and compassion. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Ukrainian Labour Temple Foundation, 591 Pritchard Ave., Winnipeg, MB, R2W 2K4, or to the Palliative care Unit at Grace Hospital. Mother, Baba, we love you and will miss you dearly. Thank you for the years of love you gave us and for the precious times we shared. CROPO FUNERAL CHAPEL in care of arrangements - 586-8044.
