JOHN ARCHIBALD (JACK) NICHOLSON After a lengthy illness, Jack Nicholson passed away peacefully on October 14, 2001. He will be lovingly remembered by his wife Jean; his children, Jeanine (Kieron Wall), Jennifer (Tom Hanel) and John (Vera Kostyshyn) and grandchildren, Devon and Kurt Hanel and Emily and Roman Nicholson; and his sister Ina Thomson. Jack was born July 22, 1918 near Eriksdale, MB. He enlisted with the Royal Canadian Engineers in 1939 and served in various theatres of war until returning home in December 1945. He pursued his dream of running his own business and built Jacks, a dance hall at West Hawk Lake during 1946. Over the years, Jacks became a favourite of many of the lake crowd and years later people would want to reminisce about the fun they had in the "good old days" at Jacks. As a resident of West Hawk Lake, Jack served as Justice of the Peace and Postmaster. Jack met Jean Brown at West Hawk Lake. They were married in 1956 and continued to run Jacks until it was sold in 1964. Jack pursued a career in the hardware industry and worked for Ashdowns, TruValu Hardware, Scotts Hardware and retired from Marshall Wells in 1983. Upon retirement, Jack was able to continue his other passion, poetry writing and story telling. He was asked to speak at various schools through Creative Retirement Manitoba and loved to entertain anyone with his epic tales. He also became very active with Seniors Toastmasters after his retirement. Jack loved to spend time at West Hawk Lake and built a small boat for his children to use called the BeBop. He also built a cabin cruiser in his garage and basement during the 1960s. He especially enjoyed spending time with his grandchildren and being a grandfather for these past seven years since Devons birth. Thanks to the 5th floor staff at Beacon Hill Lodge for their care and help for the past three months. Thanks also to the 3rd floor staff at Concordia Hospital and a very special thank you to Dr. Carey Isaac for his care for Jack which was far above and beyond. Cremation has taken place. A memorial service will be held on Thursday, October 18 at 11:00 a.m. at the Kildonan Community Church, 2373 Main St. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Manitoba Lung Association or the Childrens Hospital Foundation.
