MARY ALEXIUK (HAWRYLUIK)

MARY ALEXIUK (nee HAWRYLUIK) Peacefully, with her family at her side, after a courageous battle with cancer, Mom passed away in the St. Boniface Hospital on October 16, 2001, at the age of 82. Mary was predeceased by her husband Steve; sisters, Sophie, Ann, Elsie, Jean, Olga and Pearl. She is survived by her daughter Nancy; son Ed, and his wife, Julie (nee Prosken) grandsons, Nicholas and Lucas; sister Effie Pike; brother-in-law Joseph Pavcek; sisters-in-law, Mary Oryschak, Kay Dent, Anne Wilde, and Nadia Alexiuk; numerous nieces and nephews. Mom, Babi, Auntie Mary, Sister Mary, was well known for her kind and giving nature. Mary was born and raised in Vita, MB, to Michael and Anastasia Hawryluik, one of a family of eight daughters. After schooling she worked in Kenora and Vita Hospitals as a caregiver. Following the war Mom married Dad and they moved to Winnipeg (South St. Vital), where they raised their family. Mom worked for many years at the Niakwa Inn (Travelodge) in the dining room where she was well known and well loved for her friendly nature. After retiring Steve and Mary moved to Windsor Park. Mom helped Dad over the years cope with his Rheumatoid Arthritis until he passed away in 1991. Since her grandchildren were born she enjoyed doting on them and spending quality time with her family. Her culinary skills were renowned, she made the "best perogies in town." Mom was active till cancer touched her in 1998; she overcame this battle till its return this year. Mom was a member of Sts. Peter & Paul Ukrainian Church and its Catholic Womens League for many years. Recently she became a member at St. Bernadette Catholic Church. During her illness and even in her deepest suffering, her faith in God never wavered. Pallbearers will be Mike Baziuk, Andy Alexiuk, Larry Petroniak, Peter Hughes, Buddy Kufflick and Randy Pike. Prayers will be said on Sunday, October 21 at 7:00 p.m. in Green Acres Funeral Chapel. Funeral mass will be celebrated on Monday, October 22 at 11:00 a.m. with viewing at 10:30 a.m. in St. Bernadette Catholic Parish, 820 Cottonwood Rd. Interment will follow in Green Acres Memorial Gardens. If friends so desire, donations may be made in Marys memory to the charity of choice.
