BENJAMIN ZABENSKIE Born November 15, 1916, in Winnipeg, passed away peacefully with his family by his side on October 13, 2001, at the age of 84. He will always be remembered by his loving wife, Shirley; his children, Gary, Sylvia and Sherwin; numerous grandchildren and great-grandchildren; nieces and nephews. Ben was predeceased by his father, Abraham and his mother, Esther; four brothers and two sisters. He is survived by two brothers, Albert and Tavie. Funeral Service was held on Monday, October 15 at the Beth Israel Synagogue, 1007 Sinclair St., Winnipeg, MB, R2V 3J5 of which he was a founding member and Ben was laid to rest at the Hebrew Sick Cemetery. Ben served his country in the Canadian Armed Forces during the Second World War. He enlisted in the Winnipeg Light Infantry in 1942 and served in Europe and the Mediterranean, receiving many awards during his four years in the army. He unfailingly supported his community and many charitable organizations with great pride. The family wishes to thank Rabbi Weizman for his kind words during the service; Cantor Berkal; the pallbearers, Allen Elfenbein, Keith Elfenbein, Zvi Dill, Paul Gutnick, Sid Kassner, David Lyman, Joey Lyman, Herb Schmidt (Honorary) and Phil Beyer (Honorary) and the doctors and nurses at Seven Oaks Hospital for their care.
