ELSIE CARTWRIGHT (nee MELDRUM) Elsie passed away peacefully at the Grace General Hospital on Wednesday, October 17, 2001 at the age of 95 years. She leaves five children sad for her leaving us, proud for her life-long example, happy with the knowledge of her strong faith: Joyce and John Ingram of Ear Falls, ON, Allen and Davelee Cartwright of Sun City West, AZ, Ron and Carol Cartwright of Winnipeg, MB, Gail and Lionel Hertlein of Stoney Plains, AB and Bob Cartwright of Brisbane, Australia. Also surviving her passing is her sister Jean (Vino) Pitkanen; her grandchildren, Bonnie Smith, Jo-Anna Ingram, George (Sandra) Cartwright, Allison Cartwright, Darlene (Jeff) Higgins, Tammi (Dave) McLean, Tiffany (Robert) Le Clair, Lisa (Lorne) Christianson, Jason Hertlein; her great-grandchildren, Sierra Rose Cartwright, Cade Cartwright, Danielle Le Clair, Sarah Strauss, Carly Christianson and Skye Christianson. She was born on January 4, 1905 at Benito, MB, the daughter of George and Mary Meldrum. Their family also included John, Wilfred, Irene, Mabel and Jean. In 1927, Elsie Meldrum went to Millwood, MB (near Russell) to teach school after completing Normal School training in Dauphin, MB. She married George Cartwright the next year. Elsies life was busy and fulfilling on the farm, raising five children, gardening, taking warm meals to far fields, driving grain trucks and school buses, and also finding time to sing at the piano. In the 1950s and 1960s she farmed and taught school again. In the 1970s she moved to Winnipeg to tend house and children for others. In 1987 when her husband passed away, she moved to Fred Tipping House for 10 good years. In 1997 she moved to Tuxedo Villa Care Home. During this time, she suffered and recovered from several illnesses at the Grace Hospital. She also moved to the Golden West Centennial Nursing Home. Since moving to Winnipeg she has enjoyed all her children and families visiting her, but especially her granddaughter Jo-Anna Ingram, who was a "soul mate" - it has been a pleasure to see the two huddle and giggle like two young schoolmates. We will especially miss Moms selfless, upbeat approach to life and her ready acceptance of all that came at her in life with resolve, resourcefulness and humour. Funeral service will be held on Monday, October 22 at 1:30 p.m. at the Golden West Centennial Lodge, 811 School Rd., (corner of Ness). Viewing will be held one half hour prior to service. Interment to follow in the Waverley Memorial Gardens, 1501 Waverley St. The family would like to thank the Salvation Army and staff at both the Grace Hospital and Golden West for their kindness, faith, understanding and joy of life they all spread with a great attitude and serving ethic.
