ARCHIE DAWSON SMITH April 8, 1921 - October 18, 2001 Archie, age 80, passed away quietly at the Health Sciences Centre. He is lovingly remembered by his wife Mabel; children, Elaine Mabel (Gordon) Gilbey, Archie Robert Norman (Daphne), Alice, Donna; grandchildren, Joshua, Sarah, Julien and honourary grandchildren, Kaitlin and Tanika. He was predeceased by his parents Archibald Frederick Norman and Rose Mabel (Dawson) and brothers, Reginald, George, Stanley and Arthur and recently his cousin Florence. He is also survived by his Aunt Irene, Aunt Ann (Nan) cousins, Frances, Maureen, Douglas, Bette; nieces, Carol, Dale, Marilyn, Sue; nephews, Norman, Eugene; brother-in-law Harry (Barb) Kirk and their families and relatives in England and Australia. Archie was a life long resident of St. James. He served in the Second World War (RCAF) 412 Squadron. He worked for Systems Equipment, Campbell Lane and Haliburton, his own ADSCO Realty, Fisheries and Transport Canada, retiring in 1986. He enjoyed his involvement with the Chamber of Commerce, Valour Road Curling Club, Boy Scouts, Transport Canada Union (PSAC) and as Residents Advisor for St. James. Dad enjoyed his family, the family dog and cats, gardening, and daily reading of the Free Press. He worked hard to support his family and believed in fairness, justice and social responsibility. Archie was a friend, honest and loyal. He will be greatly missed. Much appreciation for the care by his home care workers, CancerCare staff, Canadian Blood Services, H.S.C. Pastoral Care and E.R. staff. A memorial service will be held on Wednesday, October 24 at 7:00 p.m. in the Leatherdale Gardiner Funeral Chapel, 1858 Portage Avenue with Gordon Gilbey, M.A. (Religion) officiating.
