EI YASUMATSU (nee SAKAI) Peacefully, on Tuesday, October 23, 2001, Ei Yasumatsu passed away at the St. Boniface General Hospital at the age of 58. She was predeceased by her parents, Chiyoko and Kiyoshi Sakai; and her brothers, Kiyo and Jack. She is lovingly remembered and greatly missed by her two children, Marni and Derek; her sister Sue (Roy) Mizuno; and her many aunts, uncles, nieces, nephews, and cousins. Ei was born on May 4, 1943, in Winnipeg, where she spent most of her life and raised her family. In 1964, she graduated from the School of Nursing at the Childrens Hospital in Winnipeg. Upon graduation, she began a career in nursing at the Childrens Hospital. She received great satisfaction tending to the needs of others. Her caring and compassionate nature served her well in her chosen profession and was evident in the way that she cared for family and friends throughout her life. Ei enjoyed socialising with her friends during weekly card games, long walks with neighbours, and nursing reunions. She also enjoyed looking after her garden and took great pleasure knitting beautiful sweaters for her many friends and family. Ei did not allow the deterioration of her vision to affect her independence. She remained active by volunteering at the CNIB and Folklorama. The courage and dignity with which she faced her lifes final challenge was a source of strength for family and friends. The family would like to thank the staff of the Seven Oaks General Hospital, 5th floor, and the St. Boniface General Hospital Palliative Care unit as well as the many visitors who offered comfort and support. If friends so desire, in lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Cancer Care Manitoba or the CNIB. A memorial service will take place on Friday, October 26 at 2:00 p.m. at Thomson Funeral Chapels, 669 Broadway at Furby, THOMSON FUNERAL CHAPELS 783-7211
