Esther Gilmour, wife of the late George Gilmour; beloved mother of John, Maureen and Richard; grandmother of the Southam clan and great-grandmother, passed into the arms of the Lord. Esther was born on a farm in her beloved Ireland on February 2, 1911 in Kiltomer, Co. Galway, the seventh of nine children of Thomas and Ellen Hanrahan. She travelled to Winnipeg in 1928 just for a holiday, visiting with her oldest sister Mary OBrien and then decided to remain. In 1933 she met her future husband George who was from Edinburgh, Scotland. They were married in 1934 at St. Marys Cathedral. Esther was very strong in her faith and brought up her children to be the same. She was both a member of the St. Marys Catholic Womens League and a secular Franciscan at St. Anthonys Fraternity for many years. Esther was a hard worker in everything she did and liked to keep her house in order. Esthers life was her family and she had a charitable heart. She was gentle and easy to get along with. She was always there to lend a helping hand. She loved attending family gatherings followed by a good game of cards. She was very devoted to her three children. She also loved her seven grandchildren very much. She was always at her daughters house one or two days a week to help out when the grandchildren were young. The grandchildren, Brad, Greg (Nicole), Mike, Jeff (Kerrie), Heather, Julie and Chris will remember their "Granny" with much affection. She was very happy to have two great-grandchildren, Taylor and Douglas. Her affection and kindness even extended to the family pets especially "Buddy" the Sheltie, who liked to be near her. The family wishes to express thanks to Dr. Brent Kvern and the staff at St. Boniface Hospital for their help during the several times she was ill. The family also wishes to acknowledge the help of Bibi, Esthers Homecare worker. On Thursday, November 1 at 2:00 p.m. at St. Marys Cathedral, 353 St. Mary Ave., there will be viewing followed by Mass of Christian Burial at 2:30 p.m. The celebrant will be Msgr. Michael Moore. Interment will follow in Assumption Cemetery, 3990 Portage Ave. Following the interment, there will be a gathering of family and friends at St. Charles Church, 320 St. Charles St. (turn south off Portage Ave. near the Perimeter Hwy.). Flowers will be graciously accepted or if you prefer donations in Esthers memory may be made to the Heart and Stroke Foundation, 301-352 Donald St., Winnipeg, R3B 2H8.
