Send Flowers to the Family Offer Condolences or MemorySAMUEL "GORDON" KITCHEN At the Portage District General Hospital after a courageous struggle, Samuel "Gordon" Kitchen, late of Portage la Prairie, passed away peacefully on Saturday, October 27, 2001. Gordon was born November 4, 1916 at Oakville, MB the son of William and Lucy Kitchen. He was predeceased by his parents, brothers, Arnold, Stanley, and Emery, and sons-in-law Keith Gunn and Donald Okrainec. Gordon is survived by his loving wife Belle of Portage with whom he enjoyed 62 years of marriage; his children, Ann (Clarence) Raincock of Lakeland, Helen (Jake) Smiley of East Selkirk, Gordon (Joan) Kitchen of Winnipeg; grandchildren whom he loved dearly, Darren (Joanne) Gunn, Todd (Lorraine) Gunn, Della (Larry) Cogar, Burke (Charlene) Okrainee, Peggy (Mario) Beauchamp, David Kitchen, Jenny Kitchen; many great-grandchildren, brothers-in-law, sisters-in-law and numerous nieces and nephews. Gordon received his education in Poplar Point. He joined the R.C.A.F. in 1939 when war was declared. He rose to the rank of Sargent and served until the war ended in 1945. On October 21, 1939 Gordon married Belle Lowdon and together they farmed west of Poplar Point. At the age of 51 he attended Red River Community College and achieved his Stationery Engineers Certification. In 1968, he was employed by the Portage School Division, where he was promoted to Maintenance Supervisor and served in that capacity until his retirement at the age of 66. He served the community of Poplar Point as a school trustee, member of the Hall committee and was a board member of Poplar Point United Church for many years. This kind and gentle man loved the outdoors, nature and gardening. He enjoyed fixing and building things and touched the lives of many people through his work as a carpenter. He built cupboards, bird houses, doll furniture and toys for his grandchildren. Gordon was always there to lend a helping hand wherever it was needed. A time of visitation is tonight, October 29, at 8:00 p.m. at McKenzies Portage Funeral Chapel. Funeral service will be held at McKenzies Portage Funeral Chapel, 56 Royal Rd. S., Portage la Prairie, on Tuesday, October 30 at 1:30 p.m. with Rev. Steve Wilson officiating. Interment will follow at Oakville Cemetery. As expressions of sympathy, if friends so wish, donations may be made in Gordons memory to the Poplar Point United Church, in care of Les Kelly, Box 47, Poplar Point, MB, R0H 0Z0 or to the Sunset Palliative Care, 79 1st St. SW, Portage la Prairie, MB R1N 1T6. A tree will be planted and cared for in memory of Gordon by McKenzies Portage Funeral Chapel who are entrusted with the arrangements. 857-4021
