GERMAINE ADOLPHINE GOETHALS CALDER OAKES SCHINKEL After a long illness, Jerry Schinkel passed away on Monday, October 29, 2001 at the Maples Personal Care Home at the age of 80. Jerry was predeceased by her husband Manuel Schinkel and two children, Lori Ellen and Donald Allen; husbands Jack Calder Russell Oakes; her brother Morris and his wife Margaret and their son Dennis Goethals. She is survived by her daughter Winona and husband Wilfrid Kling; grandsons Alexander and Jordan; and niece Mona Thompson. Jerry was born August 10, 1921, in Swan Lake, MB, the daughter of Victor and Julienne (Van Huyse) Goethals. As a young woman, Jerry worked as a telephone operator for MTS in Swan Lake. When she moved to Winnipeg, she taught sewing at Singers on Portage Avenue. Her talent for sewing became her career. Jerry did dressmaking in her home for many years. Her specialty was wedding dresses and she made over 300 wedding gowns over the years. Her favourite was to design the wedding gown and outfit all the ladies in the wedding party, veils, head pieces, hats and even purses. She spent many evenings curled up under mounds of white fabric hand appliqueing and beading wedding gowns while watching the hockey game on T.V. Jerry was also extremely talented in crocheting, knitting, millinery and many other arts and crafts and had a great sense of humour. Jerry was active in the UCW, the Eastern Star, Queen Winnipeg Chapter, parent council of Jobs Daughters and was an avid bowler with many trophies. Her last few years were spent at Maples Personal Care Home. Memorial service will be held on Friday, November 2 at 2:00 p.m. at Churchill Park United Church, 525 Beresford with Rev. Russell Wardell officiating. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in Jerrys memory to the Alzheimer Society, 120 Donald St., Winnipeg, MB R3C 4G2.
