ARTHUR PALMER BOURKE 1912 - 2001 Suddenly, but peacefully, on Sunday, October 28, 2001, Art passed away surrounded by his loving family. Left to cherish his memory are his wife of 56 years, Kathleen; children, Patricia (Don), Linda (Keith), and Connie (Craig) and grandchildren, Erin, Sean, Ryan, Colin, Kaitlin, and Melanie. He is survived by his youngest brother Tren (Mary) and sister-in-law Viv of British Columbia. He was predeceased by his brother Bill and twin brother Ed. Art was born and raised in St. James, the proud descendent of a prominent Irish Selkirk Settler family. He cultivated a love of golf while growing up on the family-owned Bourkevale Golf Course. Later, Art went on to pursue a career in major appliance servicing. He met Kathleen while working in Toronto, and they were married in 1945. Recognized for his career accomplishments, Art joined the teaching staff at Red River College and retired in 1978. He was a lifelong member of St. James Anglican parish and served as a sidesman for many years. Art had a positive attitude toward life and believed in looking on the bright side of things and seeing the good in people. He was always eager to help family and friends when the need arose. An avid problem solver, there wasnt a gadget made that he couldnt fix. Himself a lifelong learner, Art encouraged and supported his children and grandchildren in their academic pursuits as well as in the development of personal interests and goals. He particularly enjoyed doing woodworking projects, reading and crossword puzzles. He looked forward to the daily coffee time get-togethers with "The Fellas". Times spent at the cabin in Lavenham were very special to Art. He ardently believed in the philosophy of Free Masonry and was an active member of Masonic Lodge No. 121. He will always be remembered for the many Forum Nights that he presented. In keeping with Arts attitude to life, he would want his family and friends, at this time, to remember a joke he told that made you laugh or to reflect on the good times you shared with him. Art was an ardent supporter of his Masonic Lodges involvement in the Grace Hospital Foundation Project. In lieu of flowers, the family asks that donations be made to the Foundation. A service to celebrate Arts life will be held at 2:00 p.m. Thursday, November 1 at St. James Anglican Church, 195 Collegiate St. The family expresses its heartfelt thanks to the doctors and nurses at the Grace and St. Boniface Hospitals Intensive Care Units for their care and compassion, as well as to the Paramedics and First Responder Unit who came to his assistance.
