Date of Passing: Oct 30, 2001
Offer Condolences or MemoryLT. COLONEL (RETD) GILBERT MALCOLM HOGARTH Surrounded by his family Malcolm Hogarth passed away peacefully on October 30, 2001. "The Colonel" Malcolm Hogarth was born in Toronto in 1934. He is survived by his wife Vivian and his two daughters Heather Hogarth, Marianne (George) Mirecki, his son James (Sara), their mother Jacqueline and his stepson Greg Bain. He is also survived by his sister Meg Hogarth of Toronto and her two children Tamara and Rudyard Griffith; six grandchildren, Kyle and Lindsay Mirecki, and Jessa, Lauren, Leah and Evan Hogarth. He spent 32 years in the RCAF as a pilot and an IP. Malcolm achieved the rank of Lieutenant Colonel before retiring from the Canadian Forces in 1985. He served in every province of Canada with the exception of Quebec. He had the dubious distinction of having the longest transfer possible, while still remaining in Canada, moving from Comox, BC to St. Johns, NF. Malcolm spent 18 of his 32 years in the Air Force on the Prairies, so it was only natural for him to retire in Winnipeg where he has lived since 1977. While in the Forces, he was able to expand his education, obtaining a BA (Honours) and B. Ed from Memorial University of Newfoundland and a MA (War Studies) from Royal Military College. While in Newfoundland he hosted his own radio show, was a frequent guest on local television and was the Newfoundland Director for ACTRA. In keeping with his Scottish heritage he became Chairman for the Manitoba Scottish Dance Society and organized various Folklorama events. He is probably best known for his volunteer work in the field of gymnastics. Starting in 1969, he served in various positions such as: President of the Ottawa Gymnastics Club, Director for the Eastern Region for the Ontario Gymnastics Federation (1978-1980), Vice-President of the Canadian Gymnastics Federation (1980-1982) and President of the Canadian Gymnastics Federation from 1982-1990. While in this position he helped initiate quadrennial planning for the Federation and was instrumental in his role as Canadas representative to the International Gymnastics Federation in obtaining the 1985 World Championships for Montreal. In addition to his role as President of the National Federation, he also served as Vice-President of the Pacific Alliance of National Gymnastics Federations and as both Vice-President and President of the Commonwealth Gymnastics Confederation. Malcolm loved the outdoors and spending time at his cottage at Red Deer Lake. Malcolm fought a hard battle with Scleroderma and is in a better place now flying his Harvard!!!! He was a cool Dad... There will be a gathering of family and friends at the Army, Navy & Air Force Legion, Assiniboia Unit 283, 3584 Portage Ave., Monday, November 5 from 15:00 to 18:00. If friends so desire donations can be made to: Gymnastics Canada and/or The Scleroderma Foundation at 39 Paradise Dr., St. Anne, MB, R5H 1H3.
