PAUL A. VON HAHN, P. Eng. Paul A. von Hahn, age 75, died peacefully at his home in Lake Country on Wednesday, October 31, 2001. He leaves behind his much beloved wife and constant companion for 47 years Margaret; children, Peter von Hahn (Coldstream), Karen and Meredith Penner (Winnipeg), and Susan and Ted Cronmiller (Nanaimo) and 10 grandchildren for whom he will always be a most special Grandpa and Opa. Born in Mitau, Latvia in 1926, Paul spent a cherished childhood hunting, fishing, and exploring at Linden, his familys estate. His life underwent profound changes with the arrival of the Second World War, which sent Paul to Poland, Germany, and ultimately to Canada as one of the Mustard Seeds immigrants sponsored by the Lutheran Church. He settled in Fintry, then Vancouver, building a life characterized by strong inherent work ethics and solid family values. Paul was a Professional Engineer, working 34 years for Dominion Construction in Vancouver, Calgary, and Winnipeg. He retired in 1984 to Lake Country in the Okanagan, BC enjoying his family, friends, and interests in geneology, philatelics, politics, skiing, fishing, hunting, puttering around, and volunteer work with the Oceola Fish and Game Club and the B.C. Wildlife Federation. Paul, the unofficial von Hahn historian, was deeply committed to keeping the family past alive. His travels included side trips to unusual places collecting missing bits of information and social histories, exchanging stories, and celebrating what had been before. By Pauls request cremation, and a private family gathering to celebrate his life will be held. His family extends their appreciation to all those who called, wrote, emailed, prayed for, or visited Paul as he battled with cancer. It meant very much to him to be a part of the world even as his health declined. We thank God for the legacy left by this kind, loyal, dedicated, determined and active man.
