RICHARD ALLAN (DICK) MARTIN Peacefully after a courageous battle with cancer, aged 57 years, beloved husband of Cathy (nee Marchant) and dear father of Margaret Martin (Peter Coates), Ross and Jack Martin; loving grandfather of Catherine Oriah; brother of Robert and Ross Martin and Joyce Spadafora. He is also survived by his aunts, Isabel Martin, Ann Liburdi; nephews, Brooke Martin, Michel Martin; stepmother Anna Martin and his extended family and many friends. Dick devoted his life to improving the working conditions of people throughout the world. Beginning in Thompson, MB as President of Local 6166 of the Steelworkers Union, then as President of the Manitoba Federation of Labour, Secretary-Treasurer of the Canadian Labour Congress and President of ORIT (Labour Organization of the Americas). He was a pioneer in improving occupational workplace health and safety and established a National Day of Mourning on April 28th to honour workers killed on the job. With Dicks death, the world has lost an extraordinary man. Friends may visit at the Central Chapel of Hulse, Playfair & McGarry, 315 McLeod St., Ottawa, on Saturday, November 3 from 2:00 p.m. to 5:00 p.m. and after 12:00 noon on Sunday. Service in the chapel on Sunday, November 4 at 2:00 p.m. In lieu of flowers, donations to the Canadian Centre for Occupational Health & Safety, 250 Main St. East, Hamilton, ON Z8N 1H6 or the Dorothy OConnell Anti-Poverty Activist Award, in care of Ottawa & District Labour council, 508-280 Metcalfe St., Ottawa, ON K2P 1R7 would be appreciated.
