ALICE GRACE WINIFRED WALLIS (nee NELSON) Peacefully on November 5, 2001, aged 87 at Vista Park Lodge where she had been a resident since 1994. Born October 15, 1914, Win lived all her life in Winnipeg. She married Albert (Bert) Wallis in 1933 and they eventually became parents to three children. Win and Bert celebrated their 50th Anniversary in 1983 with many friends and relatives and had more anniversaries before Bert passed away on March 28, 1987. Win was a hard worker although not highly educated. Nevertheless, while she worked at Snowflake Bakery for a time she decided to take up typing and other office courses at Success Business College, successfully completing them. Subsequently, she was employed by the Winnipeg Tribune and then at Canadian Canners until she retired in the mid 1980s. Win was predeceased by her beloved daughter Dorothy; her husband Bert; and son-in-law Gary Graff. She leaves to mourn her passing one daughter Merle Graff; and one son Edward (Ted) Wallis and wife June; grandson Randy Lindsay (Sandy) and great-grand-twins Sarah and Matthew; grandson Robbin Lindsay (Rhonda) and great-grandchildren, Robbin Jr, Amber, Samantha and Oona; and grandsons, Quentin and Kyle Wallis; sister-in-law Kathleen Neville; brother-in-law Ted (Francis) sisters-in-law Alice, and Sarah Nelson as well as numerous nieces and nephews. Win was a tidy housewife ("A place for everything and everything in its place") and a wonderful cook and baker. She is well remembered for her pumpkin and lemon meringue pies as her pie crust was always so good and her shortbread was known not only to melt in your mouth but literally evaporate from the plate at family gatherings. Win was a prolific letter writer and kept up correspondence with relatives and friends in Canada, the U.S. and England. She wrote chatty, newsy letters to one and all and avidly saved the stamps. Win was also very talented at sewing and fine crotchet work. Family members and friends treasure the beautiful doilies she made. The family would especially like to thank the staff at Vista Park Lodge for their patient and tender care and attention where she used to serenade them and fellow residents with varied songs and ditties or some remembered poem or limerick from the past. Visitation and reception will be held on Friday, November 9 at 1:00 p.m. in the Leatherdale Gardiner Funeral Chapel, 1501 Waverley St. Interment will follow at a later date in the Brookside Cemetery, where her cremated remains will be laid beside her beloved daughter Dorothy and husband Bert. Flowers are gratefully declined, however, should friends so desire, donations may be made in Wins memory to the charity of ones choice. LEATHERDALE GARDINER 1501 Waverley Street 949-4860
