MICHAEL (MIELU) MILLO (JACOB) On November 2, 2001, in Israel, we lost a wonderful father, father-in-law, grand-father and husband. Michael was born on December 4, 1920 in Yasi, Romania, one of a family of 10. He received his education in Yasi and graduated as a chemical engineer. First the Holocaust and then the tumultuous period under the Communist regime brought great suffering and hardship to his life and that of his beloved bride Cecilia (nee Yosupovici). In 1962, at the age of 42, he made the courageous decision to leave everything behind and start a new life for himself and his family in Israel. Under these difficult circumstances, Michael quickly mastered a brand new language (added to the many others which he spoke) and quickly gained the respect of his colleagues as a safety engineer. He was renowned for his extensive knowledge in this area and remained very much in demand for his expertise, well into his seventies. Michael typified the Renaissance man: He was interested in everything, whether science, culture, medicine, or current events. His ability in the realm of political debate was incomparable. As renowned as he was in his field, Michael was the consummate volunteer. He was a respected member of the Israel Standards Association and waged a life-long battle to improve safety standards. Remembering his own experience as a refugee and new immigrant, he tirelessly helped others in adapting to their new country, providing emotional, professional and monetary support. In recognition of his years of volunteering, Michael was awarded the Presidential Award for Volunteer Work by the late Israeli President Itzchak Navon. Above all, Michaels family was his most precious of treasures; his devotion to his wife, children and grandchildren defined his life. Their well being, their education and their happiness were paramount. Mourning his passing are his wife of more than 50 years, Cecilia; his children, Ilan (Belle) and Michal Lavy (Arieh) his beloved grandchildren, Tali, Ari, Noam and Aliza Millo and Tammy Lavy, as well as three sisters, Fanny, Clara and Sophie; sister-in-law and brother-in-law, Shula and Haim Schlick, and many nephews and nieces.
