DOREEN MARY JENKINS
Born: Aug 24, 1929
Date of Passing: Nov 11, 2001
Send Flowers to the Family Offer Condolences or MemoryDOREEN MARY JENKINS (nee McGREGOR) Peacefully, on Sunday November 11, 2001, with dignity and bravery, this fine lady became another bright star in heaven. She leaves to mourn her passing her husband (Bud) her children, and their spouses Deb Jenkins (Allan Rosky), Cindy Fraser (Glenn Fraser), and Jeff Jenkins (Mark Bishop) her four precious granddaughters, Jennifer, Nikita, Ashley and Kaitlyn; her devoted "big brother" Mervyn McGregor and her cousin Margaret Gies (Dale). She also leaves to mourn a multitude of special friends too numerous to mention, who have been a monumental support to her as they were indeed a part of her life. Doreen was predeceased by her parents Oswald and Mary McGregor and grandson Jeffrey. Doreen was born on August 24, 1929 in Strathclair, MB where she spent her younger years charming the community with her infectious smile and loving personality. After graduating high school she moved to Winnipeg where she attended Angus Business College. She worked as a secretary for a number of different companies, most recently at the M.N.U., from which she retired in 1997. She owned and operated her own clothing store successfully for 16 years providing an alternative shopping experience for many of her friends. Throughout the years, Doreen faced many battles with cancer. She dealt with every one of these challenges with courage, bravery, and a fierce determination to live because her family was so very important to her. Each time her family waited for the results of yet another test, Doreen took the lead in minimizing the impact and convincing us that she could beat this disease with support from her family and friends. It is the opinion of the family that she won her battle. Doreens personal triumph in fighting cancer led her to many years of service with the Canadian Cancer Society. She was not satisfied with the services available to women who had mastectomies in the 1960s and spent the remainder of her life improving the options. >From canvassing door to door to chairing a variety of patient service committees, she was a volunteer extraordinaire giving of her time and energy and bringing hope and positive thoughts to so many. For all of her efforts Doreen received numerous awards, most notably the Silver Award, the Gold Award and the National Medal of Courage, the highest honour(s) the Canadian Cancer Society can bestow on a volunteer. She also received the Helen Hudson Memorial Award from the Victoria General Hospital. Doreen was an active member of Beta Sigma Phi Sorority for over 40 years, receiving the Woman of Distinction Award on November 9, 2001 for upholding their ideals of courage, vision, humility, loyalty, fellowship and service. Doreen was a member of the Happy Anglers Fishing Club for over 40 years and she was also a board member of the Middle Church Home in recent years. She was a long-time member of the Westwood Presbyterian Church. The family would like to thank all of the doctors and nurses who have cared for our mother over the years, most notably Drs. Robert Cooke, Ian Maxwell, Gary Krepart, Bob Lotocki and all of the staff of WR-5 Womens Pavilion. Your care and compassion will never be forgotten. At Doreens request, cremation has taken place. There will be a memorial service held in the Thomson Funeral Chapels, 669 Broadway, on Thursday, November 15 at 1:00 p.m. with Rev. Ian Shaw officiating. Interment and a graveside service will take place at Strathclair Cemetery at a later date. If friends so desire donations can be made in Doreens memory to The Canadian Cancer Society, 193 Sherbrook St., Winnipeg, MB, R3C 2B7 or the Strathclair Community Centre, Strathclair, MB, R0J 2C0. "Her many qualities and acts of kindness, her positive outlook and her incredible strength will be remembered by many. She was an inspiration to all who knew her and she will be sorely missed, but never forgotten." THOMSON FUNERAL CHAPELS 783-7211
