EDUARD FERDINAND SCHLUDERMANN On Monday, November 12, 2001, our loving father, grandfather, great-grandfather, and dear friend, Eduard Ferdinand Schludermann, passed away peacefully after a brief illness at the age of 95. He is held in loving memory by his son Eduard Harry (Shirin) granddaughter Anjali (Hal) Jensen; great-grandsons, Andrew and Anthony Jensen; grandson Michael Schludermann, all of Winnipeg; daughter Brigitte Schludermann of Hornsea, East Yorkshire, UK; daughter Ulrike (Peter) Rettig; grandsons, Patrick and Pascal Rettig, of Watertown, MA, USA; son Peter (Velma) granddaughters, Heather and Andrea Schludermann of Hillsboro, OR, USA; extended family, friends, and caregivers. Eduard was predeceased by his wife Matthea in 1998. Eduard was born in 1906, Leoben, and grew up in Salzburg, Austria. His father, who came from Bohemia, was a prominent engineer and inventor, who built some of the first melting furnaces. His mother came from Carinthia from a well-established farming family. Eduard studied medicine in Vienna, specializing consecutively in internal medicine, nose-ear and throat, and gynaecology. He had his first position at the world-famous clinic of Koch. He then set up his own practice as a specialist of goiter operations and people came from all over Austria to be operated by his cosmetic surgery technique. Eduard met his future wife in Vienna and they got married in 1934 in Hilversum, despite the obstacles of different nationalities, languages, cultures, and religions. Their first child Eduard Harry was born in 1937 and their peaceful lives were devastated by the outbreak of in 1939, shortly before their second child, Brigitte, was born. He was drafted into the German army as a surgeon. He survived against incredible odds, including a disastrous campaign in Russia and an escape from a prisoner of war camp. During the war in 1944 their third child, Ulrike, was born. Matthea and her three small children experienced severe hardships in war-torn and occupied Austria, cut off from her husband and her Dutch family. In 1948 Peter was born. In the early fifties, Eduard and his wife decided to leave occupied Austria and immigrate to Canada. Eduard preceded the family to Winnipeg in 1953 and set up a surgical practice. For two years Matthea waited with her four children in the Netherlands. Finally the family was reunited at Christmas in 1955. In Winnipeg, Eduard played an active role in the German and Austrian Societies and Winnipeg cultural life in general. He was a remarkable athlete, pioneering skiing as a young man in his native Austria. He later played a prominent role in developing the sport in Manitoba. He was president of the Puffin Ski Club and instrumental in the planning of the Birds Hill Ski Area. Eduard and his wife travelled extensively. He loved art and was a voracious reader of factual, scientific, and cultural books. All who knew Eduard will remember him as a generous, courageous, energetic, active and tenacious human being who had his strong opinion about everything. He loved and lived life to the fullest and in this he inspired many. The memorial service will take place on Saturday, November 17 at 2:00 p.m., in the Church of the Way, 450 Lilac (and Scotland), Winnipeg. A reception will follow.
