RUDY (RUDOLPH) SONTAG Peacefully, on Saturday, November 17, Rudy passed away at the age of 84 years, with his family by his side at Kin Place Personal Care Home, Oakbank, MB. Rudy was predeceased by his three brothers, John, Frank and Martin and his granddaughter Sandy. He is survived by his wife Kay; his sister Anne (Frank) Starr of Dufresne, MB; His brother Adam (Martha) Sontag of Gravenhurst, ON; his children, Richard (Judy) Sontag, Fern (Frank) Kotello, Bob (Corinne) Sontag, Gloria (Gary) Grycki, Jerry (Ellen) Sontag, Val (Brian) Werhun and Linda (Bram) Ashwell; and grandchildren, Charles (Debbie) and Trevor (Andrea) Sontag, Charlene (Joe) Galloway, Rod (Susan) and Rob Kotello, Tina, Cory and Cindy Sontag, Wendy, Shiela and Wesley Grycki, Kelly Sontag, Erica and Jack Werhun and Brandon and Brooklyn Ashwell; and great-granddaughter August Sontag. Rudy was born in the Oakbank area where he met and married his wife of 59 years, Kay Luchka. Together, they had seven children, operated a grocery store and were market gardeners. After market gardening, Rudys pride and joy was operating their U-Pick strawberry farm until his retirement at age 75 years. In his most recent years, Rudy continued to take an interest in, and offer his special advice on, everyones endeavours. He also enjoyed spending long summer days lounging in his gazebo with his best four-legged pal Porky. In his earlier years, Rudy was a School Trustee for Cooks Creek School, Sunnyside Elementary, Oakbank and Springfield Collegiate until it became Transcona Springfield School Division. He was a member of the Manitoba Vegetable Marketing Board, a lifetime member of the Manitoba Strawberry Association and a Trustee of St. Micheals Parish of Cooks Creek for many year. Rudy and Kay enjoyed travelling. One of Rudys greatest pleasures were the family gatherings in his backyard with all his children and grandchildren. Pallbearers are his grandsons, Charles Sontag, Trevor Sontag, Rod Kotello, Rob Kotello, Kelly Sontag, Cory Sontag and Wesley Grycki. Honorary pallbearers are his grandsons, Brandon Ashwell and Jack Werhun. Many thanks to all the staff of Kin Place Personal Care Home for all the kindness and compassion they have given to Rudy and all his family over the last several months. Also thanks to Father Sebastian Gacki, and Rudy and Kays special friend of many years, Rev. Alois Krivanek, for looking after Rudys spiritual care. Prayers will be offered Monday evening, November 19 at 8:00 p.m. at St. Michaels Church, Cooks Creek with Fr. Sebastian Gacki officiating. Funeral services to follow on Tuesday, November 20 at 10:30 a.m. also at the church. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Kin Place Personal Care Home, Oakbank, or to The Canadian Cancer Society. Transcona Funeral Chapel in care of arrangements.
