GEORGE (GOGIE) EDWARD SHNIER "He has been gathered unto his people" Suddenly on November 12th, 2001, Gogie Shnier, aged 38, passed away in Thompson, MB. Gogie is mourned by his parents, Rae and Cecil Shnier of Winnipeg; brothers and sisters, Clifford (Ele), Cynthia, Michael (Elaine), Jakki, Maury, Nola (Matthew) and Daniel (Becky). He will also be greatly missed by his many nephews and nieces, Jesse, Corey and Morgan, Maytal, Zack and Alex, Paulette and Leyna, Adam, Marlee, Ali and Chloe, Ezra, Yona, Galya and Gilon and Analita. He also leaves a multitude of uncles, aunts, cousins and countless close friends who loved him dearly. Gogie was a unique individual who touched a vast array of peoples lives in a myriad of ways. If the true measure of a person is the number of their friends, then Gogie was indeed rich. His caring and compassionate nature influenced many people in a way that made us all better for his being here. He shared unselfishly his knowledge and love of nature and his appreciation for the beauty of the world. He offered his kindness freely to all. In doing this, he looked at the world differently and challenged those who knew him to open their minds to new ways of thinking. Gogie was born in Winnipeg, the fifth child of what would be a family of eight children. He attained a Bachelor of Science Degree and a Masters Degree in Zoology at the University of Manitoba. The intensity that he applied to his studies carried on to his later work as well as a variety of social and personal causes. He had travelled to Europe, South America, across Canada and within Manitoba. Gogie enriched our lives immensely in the all too short a time that he was with us. The impact of our loss will be felt for years to come. The family thanks all those who have called or attended the shiva for their help and support during this difficult time. His infinite love and understanding will be a beacon for us all. The funeral was held at the Shaarey Zedek Synagogue in Winnipeg on Wednesday, November 14 at 3:00 p.m. Services were led by Rabbi Balser. Pallbearers were Clifford Shnier, Michael Shnier, Maury Shnier, Daniel Shnier, Adam Liberman and Zack Kowalski. Honourary Pallbearers were Joel Remis, Matthew Lazar and Jonathan Wolch. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in Gogies memory to the George Shnier Memorial Fund at the Jewish Foundation of Manitoba (204) 477-7525, Suite C400-123 Doncaster St., Winnipeg, MB R3N 2B2. Proceeds will be distributed in accordance with Gogies spirit and ideals.

Condolences & Memories (1 entries)

  • I worked briefly for Cecil and Rae Shnier as a companion for Gogie's younger brother Daniel 4 in 1975. Gogie was always a happy & playful boy. I took him, Maury & Nola to Oscar & Helen Tonn's in St. Agathe for a picnic in the snow! We had a lovely time. My heart broke when Rae told me his sad news. I will always remember you my dear little boy, Gogie. - Posted by: Kanchana Sillapee (Babysitter) on: May 19, 2021
