LIEUTENANT-COLONEL ALBERT BENTLEY O.B.E. E.D. It is with deep sadness that we announce the death of Albert Bentley on November 21, 2001, aged 92 years, at Grace General Hospital. Albert was born in Manchester, England in 1909, the only child of John and Bertha Bentley. The family arrived in Canada in 1912 and settled in Calgary, Alberta where Bert received his early education. He married Margaret Ormond in 1935. They had one son Jack David. Bert served in the Militia pre-war and proceeded overseas with the First Divisional Ammunition Company RCASC in December 1939. He served in Europe with the RCASC and at H.Q., First Canadian Army as ADST (T) until 1945 at which time he returned to Canada with the rank Lieut-Colonel. He was decorated with the O.B.E. He continued to serve in the Militia until 1959. From 1927 - 1932 he was employed by J.H. Ashdown Company in Calgary. From 1932 - 1959 he worked for Coal Sellers Co. Ltd. and was District Manager in Winnipeg. In 1959 he became Director of the Emergency Measures Organization of Manitoba and served in that capacity until his retirement in 1974. He was keenly interested in antique motorcycles and cars and was a longtime member of the Manitoba Classic and Antique Automobile Club. He was a founding member of the Manitoba Antique Motorcycle Club and long time member of the Antique Motorcycle Club of America. In 1997 he received his 50 year membership medal from the Royal Canadian Legion, Charleswood Branch No. 100. He was predeceased by his parents; his first wife Margaret in 1972; and his stepson Robert Harris. He is survived by his loving wife Alma; son Jack (Leslie) Bentley; stepchildren, Judy (Dick) Ritter, Fred (Marie Louise) Harris, Jim (Lucinda) Harris; daughter-in-law Maureen Harris; thirteen grandchildren; and four great grandchildren. A Service of Remembrance will be held on Saturday, November 24 at 2:00 p.m. in the Charleswood United Church, 4820 Roblin Blvd. with Reverend Michael Wilson officiating. A private family Urn Placement will be held in the Chapel of Eternal Memories Mausoleum, 1501 Waverley Street.
