ALVIN K.J. SOLINSKI It is with our deepest love and great sadness that we announce the passing of Al Solinski, aged 52, on November 27, 2001, after a heroic battle with cancer. Al will be lovingly remembered and forever missed by his loving wife and soulmate Marianne; sons, Jason and Cory; his devoted mother Nettie (Winnipeg) brothers, Ron (Randi) and their children, Zain and Nadia (Lethbridge) and Ray (Winnipeg). He will also be sadly missed and fondly remembered by many relatives from Manitoba, friends, and esteemed colleagues. The candlelight vigil held outside the Grey Nuns Hospital on November 5th was a wonderful tribute that greatly touched Al and his family. Al was very passionate about his career as an educator and principal with the Edmonton Public School Board for over 28 years. His love for children and education and his outstanding leadership will forever be remembered by those who had the opportunity to work with him and the students, staff, parents and colleagues whose lives he touched daily. During his career, Al was a teacher at Newton Elementary and also taught many years at Institutional Services, serving at Glenrose Hospital and Highwood School as a department head. As a principal, he will be fondly remembered by students and staff of Mayfield, Velma E. Baker, and Allendale, with his legacy of always giving out a "Hershey Kiss" for work well done or a kind deed. Al was so looking forward to joining his new staff at Laurier Heights this fall. His Knottwood Oltimer hockey teammates of over 20 years were a great source of enjoyment for himas was his passion for running and all sports. Al lovingly shared his enthusiasm for travelling, hiking, camping and gardening with Marianne and his sons. The family would like to express their heartfelt gratitude to all the wonderful doctors, especially Dr. Wm. Mackie and Dr. Anna Taube, and all the nurses and caregivers of Station 33 at the Grey Nuns Hospital who provided Al with such exceptional and compassionate care throughout his illness. You were all angels of mercy, and we will be forever grateful. Many thanks also to Dr. Mark Antoniuk, our family physician, for his continued great care of our family. To our loyal and dear friends, thank you for being there for us. A celebration of life will be held on Saturday, December 1 at 11:30 a.m. at St. Theresas Catholic Church, 7508 - 29 Avenue, Edmonton. Interment to follow at Our Lady of Peace Cemetery (Whitemud Drive & Hwy.14). If friends so wish, in lieu of flowers, donations in Als memory may be made to the Alberta Cancer Foundation, 11560 University Ave., Edmonton, AB, T6G 1Z2. "A leader does not set out to be a leader but becomes one by the quality of his actions and the integrity of his heart."
