HELEN MERLE MacFADYEN July 2, 1914 - November 28, 2001 With quiet dignity and courage, Helen MacFadyen passed away peacefully at home. Helen was pre-deceased in 1988 by Hugh, her husband of 49 years, and in 1998 by her son Don. She leaves to remember her fondly, her two daughters, Merle and Marg (Dennis Wilson) three grandchildren, Darlene (Richard Bellerose), Adam Wedlake (Nola) and Sean Wedlake; and three great-granddaughters, Kaylene and Mallory Bellerose and Emma Wedlake. The only child of Ed and Eva Heney of Sanford, MB, Helen learned the value of friendship early. With her gentle manner and shy smile, Mom made many life-long friends through her work and her community involvement. She fondly recalled the memories she had of the staff and students from her early days teaching at Oak Bluff, Elm Creek, and later, at Strathmillan School. A very compassionate person, she made close friends with other volunteers at the Grace Hospital over a period of 23 years. Able to play the piano by ear, she was often called upon to entertain children and seniors throughout the community. She loved to paint and immensely enjoyed taking lessons and participating in the activities of the St. James Art Club. Guided by a strong faith, Mom made some of her closest ties during her 47 year association with Silver Heights United Church. And she certainly never turned down an invitation for a cup of tea with her Bruce Avenue neighbours. Family was so important to Mom. As the family archivist, she eagerly shared fascinating stories about our ancestors. We are all grateful that she was able to pass along lessons about honesty, generosity, hard work, and loyalty, that she learned from these pioneers. Mom was never happier than when surrounded by her family at the dinner table. Oh Mom, well miss your laughter and your apple pies! Mom loved to travel and for years spent winters in Hawaii with Dad. But perhaps her favourite spot was on the verandah of their Caribou Lake cottage, listening to the loons at sunset. The family appreciates the support of the palliative care staff who helped us during Moms last days at home. Cremation has taken place and a memorial service to celebrate Helens life will be held on Monday, December 3 at 2:00 p.m. at Silver Heights United Church, 199 Garrioch Ave. If friends so wish, in lieu of flowers, donations may be made to a favourite charity. An Irish Blessing May the road rise to meet you. May the wind be always at your back. May the sun shine warm upon your face, The rains fall soft upon your fields And until we meet again, May God hold you in the palm of his hand.
