Send Flowers to the Family Offer Condolences or MemorySTERLING ORR DOWLING, M.D. Peacefully, on November 30, 2001, at Central Park Lodge (Poseidon Bay). Predeceased by his brother Blair in 1979; and wife Jessie Evelyn in 1995; he is survived by his children, Michael, Barbara (Watt) of Oakville, ON, and husband Jim and grandson Jamie; as well as his sister Gladys Mcleod of Windsor, ON. Also left to mourn are nephews, Charles (Rose), Garry (Wendy) of London, ON, and Ian Mcleod (Sandra) of Toronto. He also leaves nieces, Melody Terin (Brian), Heather Nadeau (Gerry) of London, and Ruth Regan (Tom) of Sarasota, FL, Elizabeth Carson (Tom) of Tampa, FL; and numerous great-nieces and great-nephews. Sterling, the eldest son of Charles and Gertrude Dowling, was born and educated in Winnipeg. He graduated in 1938 from the Faculty of Medicine at the University of Manitoba as a physician and surgeon. Upon completion of residency at the Vancouver General Hospital, he joined the war effort in the rank of Surgeon-Lieutenant in the Royal Canadian Navy, and was posted in Halifax and Shelburne, NS. He met and married Jessie Evelyn Trenholm, a graduate of Mount Alison University, in August 1941. Following the war, Dad was employed as the medical officer at the Ford Motor Company in Windsor, ON, before settling in Winnipeg in 1947. He set up his own medical practice at the Medical Arts Building on Graham Avenue, and had admitting privileges at what is now the Health Sciences Centre, as well as St. Boniface General Hospital. He was also Chief Medical Officer at the T. Eaton Company until his retirement in 1991. At one time, Dad had one of the largest maternity practices in Winnipeg, and delivered several generations of Manitobans. He was also recognized by colleagues as an excellent diagnostician, as attested to by many specialists to whom he referred patients. Sterling was a very caring and compassionate man; he was one of the last family doctors to make housecalls to his patients at all hours of the day and night. He and Jessie were long-time members of the Winnipeg Winter Club. He also cherished his leisure time at his summer home in Whytewold, MB. Following his brother Blairs footsteps, he became a Mason and joined Fort Osborne Lodge #144, in September, 1949. He became a Shriner in October 1979. The family wishes to express their heartfelt thanks to the nursing staff of Central Park Lodge for their kindness and compassion shown to Dad over the past several years. Funeral services will be held on Tuesday, December 4 at 1:00 p.m. at Thomson Funeral Chapels, 669 Broadway. A reception will follow at 3:00 p.m. at the Shrine House, 1155 Wilkes Ave., to celebrate his life. In lieu of flowers, if friends so desire, memorial donations may be made to The Alzheimer Society of Manitoba, or a charity of ones choice. We love you Dad. You are forever in our hearts and memories. THOMSON FUNERAL CHAPELS 783-7211
