HUGH GOURLEY TOWNSEND Peacefully after a short illness, on December 1, 2001 at the Grace General Hospital, Hugh Townsend, aged 94 years. Hugh was born in Carrickfergus near Belfast, Ireland. He was educated in Glasgow and played the pipes in the boys brigade. In 1928, on completion of his apprenticeship in mechanics in Portrush, Northern Ireland, he immigrated to Winnipeg where he served 50 years in the garage business, except for three years in the R.C.A.F. Hugh was a dedicated and devoted member of the Loyal Orange Lodge. He held degrees of the Royal Black Preceptory 685; County of Winnipeg C64; Past County Master; Golden West Lol. 2311 and Past Commander of the Royal Scarlet Chapter. Hugh was also Charter President of the St. James Kiwanis Golden K and Past Treasurer of the Sinawik Bay Social Club. Hugh was predeceased by his parents Henry and Margaret; brother Harry Townsend and sister-in-law Jessie Tumber. He is survived by his loving wife Eleanor, with whom he celebrated 59 years of marriage. He is also survived by his daughter Sharon (George) Tschikota; son Stan (Joyce) grandchildren, Andrea Tschikota, Brian (Meredith) and Lisa Townsend and their mother Sharron; and great-grandson Ethan Townsend; Dennis and Faye Townsend and family; sister-in-law Dorothy (Ray) Moss; brother-in-law Dennis (Peggy) Tumber in New Zealand; many nieces and nephews and many friends in Sinawik Bay. Grateful thanks to the staff of Extendicare/Oakview Place. A special thank you to Margaret (Home Care) and Mrs. Mildred Dean and Mrs. Chris Wilson for the many rides to Oakview. Funeral service will be held on Wednesday, December 5 at 2:00 p.m. in the Leatherdale Gardiner Funeral Chapel, 1858 Portage Ave. Pallbearers will be, nephews Michael and Cameron Tumber, Barry and George Moss, John Martynuk and Dennis Townsend. Interment will follow at Chapel Lawn Memorial Gardens. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Alzheimer Society of Manitoba, 10-120 Donald St., Winnipeg, MB, R3C 4G2.
