SHILAMUS HORNSTEIN Following a lengthy illness, our mother and Gramma, went peacefully on December 3, 2001, surrounded by her family, She was predeceased by her husband, Gordon; her mother and father, Esther and Benjamin Choslovsky; and sister Freda. She is survived by her sister Fruma Stapansky, brother-in law Max Rykiss and sisters-in-law, Celia Hornstein and Yetta Freedman. She leaves behind her children, Mel, Denny, Marty, Terry, Leonard, Bernie and Cynthia. She also leaves behind her dearest grandchildren, Rory, Ian, David, Ariel, Carli, Lindsay, Noah, Leah and Danielle. She will be missed by many nieces, nephews and friends. Shilamus was born on February 27, 1927, in Grandview, MB. Eventually she settled with her parents and sisters in Winnipegs North End. Machray School, and St. Johns High provided Shilamus formal education. Through the years, several characteristic traits guided her life and the lives of her family. Shilamus was committed to giving more than she received, she was dedicated to bringing order and purpose to everyday life, and she was willing and prepared to always work hard. These were the essences of Shilamus Hornstein, which gave shape to her life - and the lives of her children - over 74 years. Her routines of life revolved around her family, ensuring that all holidays and family occasions emphasized the importance of being together while instilling family and Jewish values. Spending time with her family and Gordon were paramount in how she enjoyed the gift of life. Shilamus was a good mother and dedicated wife. But most of all she was a great Gramma. Her grandchildren all knew that they were each number one in her eyes and heart. Amongst all the special times, she consistently recognized and took pride in her kids for just being themselves. To her older grandchildren she became a trusted friend and companion. To the younger ones she was a source of unconditional nourishment and love. The onset of the disease coupled with the loss of her beloved husband Gordon brought out qualities from which we have learned. She became tough and resolute about carrying on the best things that Gordon had done for many years. She clung to life with ever so much determination right to the end of her journey. As we carry out life without her, we intend to carry on her legacy. Funeral services were held on December 4 at the Rosh Pina Synagogue with internment at the Rosh Pina Memorial Park. Services were conducted by Rabbi Henry Balser and Cantor Richard Yaffe. Pallbearers were: Ian Elchitz, Anne Guld, Greg Berman, Shayna Warren, Brent Diamond and Norman Silverberg. To the staff of the Home Care Services Team, we have a debt of gratitude. We acknowledge with heartfelt thanks the compassionate and caring services of the St. Boniface Palliative Care Unit. We ask that in Shilamuss memory, donations be made to the Gordon and Shilamus Hornstein Fund at the Jewish Foundation of Manitoba.

  • My thoughts and prayers are with Mr. and Mrs. Hornstein. Linda has given me excellent guidance. I remember when her brother-in-law Jeremy supported my idea to be without supplement, but I later changed my mind because I remember when she'd mentioned that the brain cannot work alone. - Posted by: Philip (--) on: Dec 16, 2021
